While there are lot of very loud voices who hate what Kevin Smith has put out movie-wise in the last decade or more, I personally have at least enjoyed if not outright loved all his movies across his career. Though, admittedly, I've not seen that Jennifer Garner rom-com yet, but he was only an actor on that one, anyway.
 
I don't hate him, but as I said in the last thread, he's not as awesome as his rep would have one believe, and the best evidence is what he himself says about his methods.

That said, he's best when he makes movies just like Clerks III looks to be, so I'm looking forward to seeing it.
 
I like Kevin Smith but I don't like a lot of his movies. I thought Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was a lazy mess but somehow it worked. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, however, was just plain awful.
 
I like his first three movies quite a lot, but found some of the later ones to be surprisingly amateurish. (There's only one or two that I really loathe though.) I'll still check Clerks 3 out, out of curiosity if nothing else.
 
I've enjoyed his movies, for the most part. I really enjoy Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Red State and Clerks II. Tusk was weird, but I also liked it.

I've never seen Jersey Girl or Cop Out.

I HATED most of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, except for the last bit at the convention, and I loved the scenes with Jay and his daughter.

I'm hoping Clerks III is good. I'm glad they're bringing back Rosario Dawson and Elias :)
 
The one thing that mainly irritated me in J&SB Reboot was how frequently the characters would make a self referential joke and then stop and look at the camera as if to say, "That was a joke. Get it? Do you get that joke? See, we just made a joke. Get it? Get it?"

Smith seemed to have lost confidence in himself as a writer and felt the need to punctuate his jokes with a sledgehammer otherwise the poor audience would be lost and confused.

That being said I'll definitely watch Clerks 3, (most likely once it's streaming somewhere) knowing that it's pure nostalgia that's motivating me.

I'd say that had more to do with it being a sequel to "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back", and they did the same thing several times in that movie, like in this classic moment:

Smith has said the Jay & Silent Bob films (and the characters themselves) are basically live action cartoons, and breaking the fourth wall is a thing both movies do all the time, and Jay & Silent Bob do so in Mallrats, Dogma and Clerks II, as well.

So, while there's obviously gonna be a lot of meta-humor in Clerks III, what with the plot being quite semi-biographical, I don't think any characters, maybe apart from Jay & Silent Bob, will do any winking at the camera.
 
This one. It's his best directed and best looking film (thanks in part hiring the cinematographer from The Deerhunter) and is about actual people with actual problems as opposed to cartoonish buffoons.

It got shit on at the time because people were sick of Affleck being everywhere and Kevin Smith himself continuously dunking on it so no-one ever goes back to watch it. They should.

It's still not a great film, mind.

It's not his best film either. The fact that it's a movie that anybody could direct - including Affleck - actually detracts from Smith's resume. It sure as hell doesn't top it.

One of those movies filled with cartoonish buffoons, Dogma, dealt with questions of religious faith and assisted suicide in between all the jokes. It is the most unique movie he made before Red State, and definitely one of the funniest. Dogma stands out as both thought-provoking and hilarious. Jersey Girl doesn't stand out at all.
 
Man I was such a fan of Smith back in the day. Those first five films are superb, even if you kinda have to be a fan of the first four to really enjoy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The Clerks animated series was also great.

Mallrats and Chasing Amy are probably my favourites. That said I haven't re-watched any of them in years, and I just realised the last new film of his I saw was Clerks II (which was enjoyable) Many of his later films just didn't appeal (though I'm not entirely sure why I've never seen Red State, I really should correct that omission because people say it's good.) I certainly had no desire to see Tusk or Yoga Hosers.

I will watch the JaSB reboot at some point.

I was going to say that it strikes me that Smith hasn't really matured as a film maker, and that certainly my tastes have changed in the intervening years as well, but given I haven't seen anything he's made since 2006 it seems a trifle unfair to make that assertion! I'm just basing that off of things I've ready about his later work.

Returning to the well for a third time with Clerks does make a lot of sense, and I am genuinely excited to see this. In the meantime I really ought to watch Red State, it's been on my to watch list for years!

I'd even argue that (sometimes) he's gone backwards. Some of his more recent movies are (IMO) somehow so much worse than a cheap little movie he cobbled together by filming at night at his day job location. But some are much better. He and M. Night are probably the most unpredictable 'name' directors of the last thirty years. ...not in a good way. ;)
 
I'm excited for the movie after seeing the trailer. I hated Reboot, but this seems like Smith actually trying to make a Kevin Smith comedy, not him making an obnoxious stoner comedy like Reboot was. He can still do great work, the Master of the Universe show he produces is great, so I think he has it in him to make an excellent Clerks III, he just generally hasn't felt like doing this type of movie since Clerks II came out.

He really seems to have a passion for making this film in particular, so while he could screw it up I'm hoping for him to pull out a movie that is more like the stuff he was doing in his prime. I could be proven wrong, but as of right now I'm hopeful. I don't think its going to dethrone Dogma as my favorite KS film, but I think it could match Clerks II or Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (both of which are great, just not at Dogma's level in my opinion).
