Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 1x09 - "All Those Who Wander"

Yeah, no kidding. I see more fan written articles ripping apart Obi-Wan Kenobi for canon violations (speculation and whatnot) than on SNW. The only complaints I see on Reddit are from the usual suspects who despise Kurtzman and everything he does, including breathing.

 

Been a while since Star Trek made me cry this much.

Yes, the comparison with Aliens is a bit obvious but ya know what, imitation is the finest form of flattery. And I don't mind them flattering Aliens.

 

They were trying to go for suspense/horror, but I was literally laughing at the audacity of the Xenomorph/Predator hybrid, with a little Jurassic Park thrown in.

 

I never believed that all alien races were homogenous. Just like not all Humans are the same, I always thought that that there were different varieties of Klingons, Romulans, Trills. etc. I think I can add the Gorn to that list. Unless they say that all Gorn are like this, I think that the slower, more humanoid type of Gorn is still waiting for Jim Kirk in the future...

 

Don't forget Stranger Things. The Gorn were literally the demodogs, complete with similar sound effects.

 

Just turned this on and, hahaha, two brand new never before seen characters named, one promoted, another about the leave the ship, and they're going on a mysterious mission with the series regulars/recurring?

C'mon, play into the stereotype, put them in the red shirts.

 

What's a demodog? (sp?) Some kind of futuristic hot dog?

Same here. This monolithic expectation of alien races is one best left behind.

To be fair, in TOS season 1 gold shirts had a higher mortality.

 

I think La'an stated they molt which suggests to me they some analogues with amphibian qualities, not just reptilian qualities. Perhaps they may have multiple life phases, what we're seeing might be the equivalent of Gorn tadpoles, whereas one Kirk encountered was an adult.

They can be quite different. The younglings metabolism might not be sustainable, perhaps when they reach maturity they exchange it for great strength.

 

The creatures from the Upside Down featured in season 2 of Stranger Things....the "dog" version of the Demogorgon. They caalled them "demodogs." Yeah, it was a bit lame.

I agree. I have come to equate canon purists with Luke Skywalker crying about "the sacred texts" in The Last Jedi.

 

The Gorn Kirk faced was probably the oldest Gorn in the Hegemony. He sure wasn't quick.

Maybe he was sedated from cold medicine.

 

Yeah I know, right? Star Trek HAS NEVER been derivative at all in it's existence......oh, wait...

Please go watch the theatrical film Forbidden Planet (1956) - and get back to me on how 'original' Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek has been over the years.

Yes, this episode was essentially Aliens meets Predator in Star Trek, but it was still well done, entertaining, and had a great character moment.

I'll take that over such 'original Star Trek concepts 'like say Brannon Braga's Voyager episode Threshold <--- Yep, that was a TRULY ORIGINAL Trek concept - "Going Warp 10 evolves humans into slimy salamanders..."

As long as the story is interesting and done well, who cares what they're cribbing from? Again, it's something Star Trek has done from DAY ONE of it's existence.

Well lets be reasonable and rational here. If you had only previously though humans gave natural births and then saw a C-Section you would consider that utterly inconsistent with your previous knowledge. But it doesn't mean its not a real possibility.

MCCoy states,"Sweetheart, I once performed an emergency C-Section on a pregnant Gorn. Octoplets, and let me tell you those little suckers bite."

Clearly there are some things that seem to be in common.

Multiple offspring. Check!
Violent at birth. Check!

Now the differences are we are told by La'an that Gorn use other species for breeding hosts. And lets be very clear her knowledge is in noway shape or form encompassing every aspect of Gorn culture. Its just her personal experience.

Will the Gorn use their own kind as hosts? Prime we don't know, but since they adapt to a host, it seems a least a real possibility.

Now what kills the host? Is it the damage from hosting the Gorn, or their ripping their way out of the host body? I'm leaning on ripping their way out of the host body. So would a C-Section, a non natural birth, make reasonable sense? Hell Yes. If you could deliver them before their natural birth process, then its a strong possibility the host would live.

Now to maintain both societies, I would thank they would look for ways to safely remove Gorn before birth occurs. A C-Section type procedure would seem a good example and one that is easy enough to explain to the viewing public. And for the Gorn (unless they are a far larger power then we have ever been lead to believe) might need to change their behavior to prevent the mass extermination of their race, and that could mean curtailing the use of sentient beings as hosts against their will.

All seems fairly reasonable and logical to me.

 

Either that or McCoy was just telling tall tales to play in to the moment.

 

I have wanted an Alien-Trek crossover for so long and this episode didn't disappoint!

 

Kelvinverse. Timeline change altered Gorn evolution, made them give birth instead of eggs. Butterfly wings and what not. Creators confirmed timeline changes went in both directions not just forward.

 

Yes. Exactly. A character like Chapel, who we’ve known previously as withdrawn and more private. Something happens to her. Isn’t it fascinating to see where that journey takes her?

It’s not the destination that matters. Or the starting point for that matter. It’s the journey. That’s what SNW is all about.

In “The Cage,” we saw a beaten down, tired and defeated Pike. Honestly, we’ve seen shades of this side in Disco and SNW. And frankly I’ve much appreciated a captain who actually cares about his crew and can make a joke on occasion.

You’re entitled to your opinion but we’re talking about SNW, not Disco.

This is an opinion. You’re entitled to it. I disagree. I love exploring facets of characters we’ve never seen. I don’t mind them revamping the Enterprise. I respect that others disagree.

Again, journey not destination.

Oh well! I think Ortegas is a great character. I’d love to see more development, but she’s a lot of fun. They could have kept the character a male, but they didn’t.
