Could a new Trek show done in the 90's TNG/DS9 style work today?

I guess they are trying once again to get a new movie going.

Well, that's what I was hoping for, too. One similar in general style to DS9/Voyager/TNG. To me, that's Star Trek. It's the writing style, the calm dialogue, depiction of life aboard the ship, maturity of character interactions, the way the sets are designed, and even the hum of the ship and general atmosphere on board. And the general directing style. And how the characters develop in their independent, team, and personal capacities. That's before you even get to the plot of the particular episode.

An attempt to resurrect this style could easily be thwarted with poor casting, though. It's hard to find the right diverse group of actors.

My impression of SNW so far is that it's partly heading in this direction. But whether it gets closer remains to be seen. After watching the first two episodes I went back and watched the pilots of DS9/TNG/Voyager. Honestly, I can't say SNW is bringing back the same feeling yet. But I'll give it time. I think the ship design is actually something I'll have to get used to. The rooms are big, open, and industrial and remind me of a large hospital. Even the DS9 station didn't leave this impression on me. Atmosphere and decor is important, actually.

I used to be on board with the idea of a Starfleet Academy show as something different. But that was before they abandoned the model they had going with DS9/TNG/Voyager. I'm looking for a return to normalcy before there's yet another series that veers off in a new direction.

honestly the feeling that the TNG And DS9 pilots evoke to me (and I love both series) are mainly of boredom: those pilots just weren’t among the best episodes of the series. Voy’s was a bit better but still pretty generic imho.

Whereas, to me, that's one way to do Star Trek, but it's not the only way, and it's not the original way. There were two Star Trek TV series and four movies before TNG, after all. TNG is just one of the ways to build on TOS. It's not the foundation of all Star Trek.

Really? I've watched "Emissary" more often than some of the movies, and more often than most episodes of the Berman era. It's one of my favourite first episodes in all of Star Trek. It wastes no time establishing itself; you know you aren't watching TNG, even if the dialogue, direction, music, and so on are reasonably consistent, by starting with the bang of the Wolf 359 scene, then the family element of Ben and Jake, the clash with Picard, then the mysterious and potentially dangerous new setting, introducing the new characters, visiting Bajor and the wormhole... it does a lot in its running time.

I’ve watched emissary a few months ago and found it more boring than I remembered, sorry. And I love how DS9 developed.

It seems as though my question has been answered (to me at least). Strange New Worlds feels pretty much like 90's Trek to me with some minor differences. I am loving it so far! It doesn't keep throwing a bunch of things at me every minute like Disco and Picard do. It gives a lot of breathing room and time to absorb all of it in.

Wow, that's...very much not one of my complaints about those shows.

When did I ever say it was a bad thing? It's not a complaint. If you look at my first post in this thread, I mentioned that I like Picard and Disco. I'm just saying that it's nice to have a Trek show with a slower pace again.

Isn't that the purpose. To have multiple styles rather than the cookie cutter one size fits all trend?

90s style has an appeal. And it clearly works for many. I invite it to join the fold rather than replace anything.

The last season of both shows are not known for their breakneck speed.

I don't think it's a good idea to try to recapture the past.

Good thing, because that's quite difficult.

    No.

Right now, in terms of storytelling and special effects, The Expanse sticks out for me. Star Trek from the 90s really reminds me of the Office without the humor.

SNW is basically in the mold of 90s Trek.

TNG had a softer look…do that as a flashback episode
