    Hi!

First of all: I don't know Star Trek at all, so I need your help!

A friend of mine is totally into Star Trek and I want do surprise him at his birthday. That's why I want to sculpture something Star Trek related out of Fimo/Clay. I just don't know what so I hope you can give me some ideas! Sculpturing the Enterprise would seem a bit uncreative I think.
I know he is a fan since 25-30 years.

I hope you can help me!

Cool idea! A classic Trek scene (from 25-30 years ago) that gets sculpted is Picard burying his head in his hand out of annoyance. If you Google "Picard sculpture," you'll see what I mean. We'd love to see the finished sculpture, whatever it turns out to be, if you get a chance to share it! I'm sure he will love it!

Lol, I know that from memes!

btw, it's nice if it isn't "a classic sculpture", because he could buy that himself. But of cause it makes sense that many typical Trek scenes are sold as merch so maybe I just have to accept that.

Oh sure, if it turns out good, I'll post it here. But first I need few ideas! Picards facepalm did not quite convince me yet, I don't feel his annoyance is what my friend loves about Star Trek

    That is a great idea!

If you are sculpting characters, I've got a couple. Not sure if they are already found on the internet, though.

    1. Spock, with his Vulcan salute.

    2. Data, head tilted while holding a tricorder.

    3. Sisko in the captain's seat of the Defiant.

    4. Seven of Nine, at her console in Astrometrics.

    5. Garak.

One way to perhaps get a better idea is find out who his favorite characters are. Or at least what kind of characters. Like, does he prefer aliens over humans. Or an outsider character. Or one of the captains. Maybe even the villains. (Khan, Tomalak, Dukat, a Vidiian, one of the Xindi species, etc.)

I think once you find out who his favorites are, you can narrow down your search and hone in on what you think can be done with clay. (I am definitely not an artist, so I don't really know how that process works.)

If he prefers the ships, you can find all sorts of images and base a sculpture on them.

I'd definitely be interested in seeing the end result! If you like, please feel free to post it. I am certain many here would love to see.

    Any other questions, just ask.

    And welcome aboard!

    Hi!

    Thanks for your ideas.
I'm afraid whole figures are too hard for me, a bust would already be very challenging but still a realistic goal. But the point is: If I make a bust instead of an object, it's way easier to notice if I fail with proportions or details.
But I'll keep your ideas in mind, Picards facepalm as well.

I asked his husband what his favorite character is and the answer was Data

I also know that something he loves a lot about Star Trek is that their society is somehow better?

Can you tell me whats awesome about Data?

The better question is... what is NOT awesome about Data?

For me, he was the reason why I became a science fiction fan. It became such a huge part of who I am that I would likely be a very different person without it. As you can see, he is also a beloved character to me.

But you asked why he is awesome. Let's start with a few reasons...

    1. He is a model hero. He never does anything out of malice or hatred. He always takes time to help. He encourages people. He does all these things expecting nothing in return.

    2. Insanely intelligent. Of course he is, since he is an android. But he never is arrogant about it.

    3. He is immensely curious. He sees the universe with the wonder of a child. Nothing is trivial. He wants to try it all.

    4. He gives a unique perspective on humanity. He wishes to understand it and be a step closer to it. He does things that help him explore the human condition, from learning what is funny to understanding what it means to feel like you belonged, and everything in between.

    5. He is completely honest. Unless under orders, he never lies.

There's a lot of other great qualities about Data, but those should give a good idea on what kind of person he is. (In my eyes, he is much more than a character, but a real person I got to know while TNG aired. In some ways, it feels like we grew up together.)

A bust of Data sounds awesome. I'm sure you can find some great pictures of angles of him on the internet. Personally, I think if you find one that has his head slightly tilted would be one that captures his essence the most, because more than anything, he is curious. Curious about existence, humanity, his place in the universe... everything. That image, to me, probably captures his soul the best.

My friend is a Star Trek fan.

I give him Data's severed, dead head in a box as a gift.

    What happens next?

If you want something simpler than a face or figure, how about a Horga'hn?

It isn't severed, just disconnected. It cannot be dead, only non-functional.

What happens with any art. I would put it on display as exactly what it represented, an historical artifact. Then live the rest of my life waiting for Data to come claim it. ;)

You could do a nice little Guardian of Forever. And you don't have to be worried about Harlan suing you.
