Wasn't there some indication that Andor was the name of the gas giant, and Andoria the moon that the Andorians actually come from?

That's what I've heard. Andor is the gas giant planet seen in the Season 4 Aenar episodes and Andoria is the ringed, icy planet that's the home for the Andorians and the Aenar.

If I remember correctly, that was an altered premise to account for the mistake of calling it Andoria in the first place. It's been years since I've seen the episodes in question, but that was my take on it at the time.

And you may ask yourself, "Am I right, am I wrong?"
And you may say to yourself, "My God, Bones, what have I done?"

And you may ask yourself, "How do I warp this?"
And you may ask yourself, "Where is that cloaked Romulan vessel?"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful ship!"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful Worf!"

Supposedly when the name Andor was first used, someone at Paramount blew a gasket because they felt the name sounded too similar to Endor. Therefore it was changed to Andoria.

A shame they didn't come up with "Quentulus Quazgar Mountains in the land of Sevorbeupstry on the planet Preliumtarn, third out from the sun Zarss in Galactic Sector QQ7 ActiveJ Gamma " instead, and we had to wait till HHGTTG was written before we got that location.

    As for ship names:

The USS Fanboy Service - has the best of everything, to a completely ridiculous degree.

Going back to anime names for a second, not a ship name, but the Nausicaan's were named after the 1984 Miyazaki film Nausicaa, which in turn was named after the Greek God of the Wind.

At least according to Mike Okuda via the Star Trek Encyclopedia.

    No it is not.
Nausikaa is a mortal princess appearing in the Odyssey:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nausicaa

The ruler of the Winds in Greek mythology is the mortal king Aeolos (who sometimes is also seen as a god) the various winds are independent entities, chief among them being the Four Cardinal Winds (West, North, East and South)

Speaking of anime, I always imagine there is an Akira-Class U.S.S. Kusanagi somewhere in the fleet.

There is in Star Trek Online. It's not Akira class, but a later variant called the Armitage Class, which is also named after an Anime

There is a prime universe version but Memory-Beta doesn't have an article for it.

No worries. Please don't understand my corrections wrong, it's nothing against you, I'm just a giant (and I mean GIANT) Greek Mythology nerd. Those myths (or at least adaptations of them) were the first things I ever read in my life.

USS Expendable. Crewed entirely by red shirts. To be used as a sacrificial ship whenever a threat to the hero vessel needs to be demonstrated. Already up to Expendable-E.

Or is that too cynical even for a Starfleet Badmiral?

They'd probably feel less doomed if it were named something like USS Fodder.
