Seems like Mas' complaints about canon would be more viable if he remembered actual details of it.

Wow this episode was baaad. The endless 'music', singing, fake-looking set (surrounded by christmas lights) and the drawn out 'figuring out communication'. Boring! The first episode was ok, this one was garbage. This episode is just Discovery with a different skin - and not even that different at that.

Same irritating, irregular, unnatural cadence as Discovery, too. What the hell is is with that? Like everything is abrupt, shallow and decided in an instant but then suddenly a drawn out, "We've lost contact with the ship. We're on our own" instance of repeated sentences. The dialog just like Disc., is often incredibly dumb and cringeworthy - can't quite put my finger on it. Like a mixture of a kids' show and some amateur writer creating the dialog.

I'll stick with it though and hope it's the usual star trek 'first season is trash' problem.

Why bother? Mind seems made up.

Hilarious to see the "Christmas lights" comments given TOS light design.

Have you watched any trek before 2009? It has always had episodes like this.

This episode was pure classic trek. Weird alien puzzle and languages solved before the end of the episode.

You're right - a lot of those were terrible too, from what I recall. The Cage was unwatchable and so was Encounter at Farpoint.

Trek needs more pie fights. I've said it since I was a kid.

The best part was when Lieutenant Curly snuck up behind a Klingon, made him bend down and just planted the pie in his face.

You had already decided you were going to hate it before it started.

Your whole 'thing' is really boring.

    Right, not enough PEW PEW!!!!

But The Cage is Trek's original canon. You must hate everything else because it violate it.

    No?

Ever watch that old movie Bugsy Malone? It's a gangster epic starring an all kids cast, and their tommy guns shoot cream pies. It's a classic! It's also a musical of sorts with some pretty good tunes. A very young Scott Baio and Jodie Foster headline it.

Y'know, it's really weird. The Final Reflection is my fav ST novel of all time, but I could never get into How Much For Just the Planet. Same author. Go figure.

    Exactly. Trek is being Trek.

The only thing that changed is fans ability to be flexible.

Ok, finally managed to watch this ep.
    I fucking love that show.

No, seriously. Having good Star Trek back is... hard to describe. Like seing an old friend after 20 years again, and everything felt like back then. TOS was always my favourite (TNG a veeery close second) - and this show just manages to capture that feel of it. Not everything is perfect. Not everything makes perfect sense. But it feels just so much is possible, and it feels so imaginative and adventurous. Great characters. Great SF ideas. Funny & thrilling plots. I love it.

    Some remarks/nitpicks:
    • I love the "kitchen" scene. It felt so human, like a team of astronauts on a space mission would actually behave
    • Not a fan of Uhura being added into the "Star Trek orphan's club" though
    • The scenes on the asteroid (& the singing) felt incredibly alien to me. Well done! That's The AR wall (invented for "Mandalorian") put to veeeeeery well use
    • Not a fan of the Pike-story (or the "predestination" paradox of the asteroid). No idea where they are going with it. Very iff-y on that overall direction, wish DIS wouldn't have gone there (and SNW to double down on it - with Pike knowing all the details instead of just a rough "vision"). But OTOH it's very well told so far (pics of the kids). We will see.
    • Anson Munt has a fuck-ton of charisma. The new Uhura was a fine POV character and I really liked the actress and her story this ep. Not sure about her being actually the original Uhura though, she seems more like a differnet character to me
    • I get what they are going for with Sam Kirk. And I love "Guy Fleegman" from Galaxy Quest. But at the end of the day - it's just another legacy character in the crowd, and it also feels unnecessary cruel considering his later (canon) fate

    Final verdict:
I said ep 1 was a 10/10 "built-the-team" episode and a 7/10 "aliens of the week"-episode mixed together to one 8.5/10 one. This one had a much better "plot". I wanted to give it 9/10, because I'm very hesitant to give out 10s, ever, and usually spare them for the absolute break-out episodes. But fuck it - this one had everything I love about Star Trek, space exploration, aliens, ship action, SF ideas, great characters, fun, adventure, ethical behaviour - it's objectively probably "only" a 9/10, but I'm gonna' give it a:

    10/10

I've been wondering if they were using that tech for this show. Seems like it should be a standard thing going forward. Unreal Engine is capable of some crazy-good shit.

I'm not a fan of the 'small universe' stuff either. The actress playing Uhura is doing a great job, though. We didn't get to see much of Sam Kirk aside from him getting knocked into cardiac arrest. Jury is out on his character.

In the same vein, after watching an interview with the actress playing Chapel, I'm doubly bummed that they didn't just make a new character and let her rock that righteous Aussie accent!
