I wonder if the attitude that Roddenberry had towards TOS as he got older rubbed off on Berman in a way. Roddenberry became more and more disillusioned with TOS, kind of like Lucas and the original Star Wars, and used TMP and TNG as a way of reimagining the future.

Idle speculation on my part, but given how TOS was regarded as a historical artifact, at best, seems to make more sense.

I wasn't aware Roddenberry ever felt that way about TOS. The work he was able to do (RIP) on TNG was inferior to TOS. Some of the stuff he did on TNG was downright ridiculous while TOS was still widely regarded as a classic.

Why would Berman want to do a prequel and ignore TOS? That's not a good recipe. He should have moved forward (post Voyager) if he didn't really want to go backwards.

Yeah, Roddenberry did not feel warmly towards TOS as he designed TMP and TNG. So, if Berman was helping to carry that flame forward it makes a lot more sense as to why ENT ended up the way it did.

Why would Berman do a prequel? I don't know! Why did Lucas do prequels instead of sequels that he supposedly had scripts for?

At least Lucas' prequels (while not as popular) fit with canon. Berman's stuff didn't always respect canon and often wasn't trying to establish a backstory that fit with what we knew of TOS (which is really the purpose of a prequel).

I'll simply say that Lucas' stuff did not fit with canon. Lucas just reworked it to fit.

Lucas and Berman batted about the same from my point of view.

Season 4 is the best season, although I can understand why people would also say season 3.

The worst, well it’s one of the first couple of years isn’t it. I’m not as down on season 1 as some seem to be, but yes I’d probably say season 1 is the worst, although I still enjoyed it. Just not as much as the others.

As for season 1 being the worst season of Star Trek, TOS Season 3, TNG Season 1, and every season of nuTrek thus far, say hello :)

Season 3 was bad. It took Star Trek from aspirational to chasing after the news of the day. I won't fault writers for writing, or individual stories, or any such thing, but producer decisions to forget that Star Trek is supposed to have solved today's problems and go after "what's next" makes it..well, NOT Star Trek anymore.

100%. I am surprised at the lack of votes it has received. As boring as season 2 was, season 3 was a train wreck for multiple reasons.

Introducing Andorians some 6 episodes into the show I think it's a big exaggeration that he wanted to ignore the original series but I can certainly understand that he felt more affection for, and definitely more understanding of, his 24th century version of the Klingons than what had appeared in the original. Otherwise I don't think he dislike the original just wasn't reverential to it-which is okay.

Season 4. They ended on a poorly done and haphazard note. I would have continued the show for 5 seasons and have a proper final sendoff with the Enterprise having gone through a refit and the background of the federation having been just recently foundoff. Season 5 in my eyes would involve closer co-operation between the various races of the Federation and I would have had some Tellarite and Andorian crew members onboard the Enterprise as some sort of exchange thing. Imagine if Tucker was made an engineer on a Tellarite ship for an episode for an exchange, the Tellarites were vastly underutilized and underdeveloped.

That's a really cool idea. The episode of TNG where Riker serves on a Klingon ship was really funny and it felt like Riker learned a lot from the experience.

Imagine Tucker making some Tellarite friends and seeing a Tellarite on the Enterprise.

In the first three seasons of Enterprise, there was little development of most of the established alien races from TOS and TOS films. It was mostly new alien races we had never seen before being introduced (especially in season 2). I would have enjoyed the show more if they stuck more to back story.

All the season 4 call backs to TOS didn't really work for me at all.
I liked TOS it just never loved it,It was always too dated and campy for me.
I viewed it in the same way as the adam west batman,As an amusing artefact rather than a great show.
So season four gets my vote

Season 1 for me. I never thought it felt like a prequel to TOS but more of a launching off point from "Star Trek VIII: First Contact". It was a TNG spinoff which was too busy explaining why TOS looked a certain way such as the aliens from that time. The characters felt a lot like TNG, I had difficulty having an investment in them. I think there's probably 2 episodes I tolerated from other seasons "Carbon Creek" & "In the Mirror, Darkly Pt. 2" but there's an underlining statement which was presented too often in that season 1 that whatever TOS did ENT did it first!

Roddenberry definitely tried to distance himself from TOS when the opportunities came up to make new Trek years later. In his TMP novelization, he presented what we saw in TOS as some kind of exaggerated, stylized depiction that didn't really match up with what "really" happened. And then with TNG, he didn't want any callbacks or sequels to stuff that happened in TOS (but then we got "The Naked Now" right in the first season).

Rodenberry's dream never died, its just that human values and perspectives changed, and a lot of what was done in the original show seems questionable by today's standards. Its like when Lucas went back and remastered the first trilogy. Fans balked, but he just wanted to do the things he couldn't do at the time, tech-wise. I am sure Roddenberry felt the same way - TOS was pretty cringy, effects-wise (but as someone who grew up with that show, it was amazing back then).

Also, considering some of the future-history he had had already gone into the toilet by the time TnG came around, and yet, he ridgedly insisted on keeping it, instead of fiddling with the timeline - something he should have done when TnG began, but now is too late. I am sure he was disappointed in the human race - no Eugenics war of WW3 yet. LOL

So as to which season was the worst? My real answer is "the one we didn't get", but an honest answer to the question is the first, because usually the first season of every show is 'iffy' until it finds its legs (except in the rare cases when the show is amazing the first season, in which case it will never live up to its own hype, and just fails in season 2 - I'm looking at you, Heroes, etc.) People seem to overlook how cringy the first season of TnG tended to be.
And now Wesley is a 'space god' {insert Picard-style facepalm).

Season 2 is a real slog to get through when rewatching the series. So many dull episodes. And it contains the worst acting performance I have ever seen commited to film: Padma Lakshmi in Precious Cargo. Everything about her performance was cringeworthy.

That episode I think made a lot of people back then realize Enterprise was on the wrong path ("Where did the Andorians go?"). It was a really terrible character development episode.

I loved 3 and 4. I think 1 and 2 had some episodes that were dull or copies from other treks. But 1 and 2 also had some good episodes as well.
