When my parents first saw that in MIB, my dad recognized parts of that, since he was in a similar situation in officer training in the Air Force. He said you'd be surprised how many were not able to assess everything first, then go for the solution (and yes, some of the pencils were neatly cut to snap when trying to do the test, etc.)

And for another example of Star Trek using historical/archieved real world footage - in TOS S3 "Let This Be Your Last Battlefield" when Lokai and Bele are running through the 1701 corridor to the Transporter room - the semi-faded footage of destroyed and burning buildings was WWII newsreel footage of various bombed buildings taken shortly after said bombings had occurred.

And if we're just limiting "woke political messaging" to even mentions of then-current or recent events TOS mentioned Hitler by name at least three times over three seasons. Trek has always had a political underbelly to comment on the modern world and whether it's as subtle as a sledgehammer or far more quiet it's always there.

Of course. And I'll remind you that I actually agree with you that this was the correct, literal answer. I'm simply pointing out that language is rarely literal, and that I think a course on reading comprehension has to take that into account as well.

 

My wife has a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition, and has taught English at the university level for 27 years. I have yet to see a college level course specifically devoted to "English Comprehension." That is not to say that such a course has never been offered anywhere, just that I have never encountered one in 38 years as either a student or faculty spouse. What college or university offered the course and what was its course number - was it a 100-400 level course or a graduate level course - and how many credit hours did students receive for this course?

The exercise/test you described is virtually identical to one my ninth grade science teacher issued to us the first day of class back in 1980. The usual point behind the exercise is not to test English comprehension. It's to get one up and over on competitive overachieving students by leveraging their eagerness to perform and typical test taking behavior, behavior that usually works to their advantage, against them. It's also supposed to be a lesson in not leaping into action before having read and processed all the data.
