the cartography room in Star Trek Generations. What did you think of it?

Did you prefer the old cartography room in the Next Generation show where all it was was just a clear round globe attacked to a console or did you like the newer version of the cartography room in the Generations movie where it was pimped out with snazzy special effects.

The stellar cartography set was a complete waste of money for a film that was nickeled and dimed to death by Paramount considering that the CGI in question could have been just as easily displayed on the bridge viewscreen.

I loved the Generations cartography room.

Hell, I'd love to see a bridge that looked like that.

Like someone already said, the aforementioned Star Trek VII set was a completely unnecessary waste of money. I loved it!

I loved it. Thought it looked (and still does) excellent.

Would I have preferred the money spent on the Enterprise facing off against an actual Klingon Battlecruiser and dropping the re-use of TUC footage though?

    I think I would.

Yes, especially with the big piece of Klingon Bird of Prey obviously bouncing off of the studio floor after the ship blows up. I can kind of understand the shot ending up in TUC if they were limited on budget for that film and couldn't make a whole 'nother ship model to blow up again. But ideally they would have learned from that, and improved when the next movie rolled around with its own budget and its own ship models (instead of reusing footage for something as dynamic as a space battle).

I thought the stellar cartography room was pretty cool, and added to the cinematic feel. But it was kind of extraneous and they could have used the budget elsewhere instead.

I enjoyed the set and the scene in the film. It's actually one of my favorite scenes in GEN, as it's just Picard and Data trying to solve a puzzle, and the actors carry what could otherwise be boring and unengaging and make the entire thing pretty engaging.

In many ways, it's GEN's version of the observation lounge scene in FC where Picard and Lily have it out.

It's money that could've been better spent elsewhere.

I thought it was a great visual set for the movie and made a nice change from some of the TV-sized Enterprise-D sets.

Those of you who thought it was a waste of money, what would you have spent it on instead?

A new Klingon spacecraft design would not have gone astray because ST:GEN was the fifth film that stinking BoP miniature showed up in, to say nothing of its multitude of appearances in TNG and DS9.

I personally wouldn't have spent money making a new hero miniature, but I certainly would have earmarked some dough for a new destruction shot. And a few extra torpedos for the Ent-D.

I loved that stellar cartography room in Generations, particularly the way you could just zoom through the cosmos in full-on 3d.

They could have done exactly the same thing on any display device aboard ship including a PADD.

Or the holodeck. But they got a lotta space on the ship, may as well have a dedicated room.

Yeah, but on a PADD, you can't stand on an elevated platform while the galaxy rushes past your head at warp speed, screaming "I'm king of the world!"

I would use a Vorcha or Neg'var class ship for the Enterprise D to fight against, and give them a better battle. And hire more or better writers

I always felt the novel 'Federation' would have made a great movie to bring together the two casts. FAAAAAR better stuff than Generations. Plus, it would have canonized Federation on screen. And not killed Kirk.
