Despite how I felt about the episode, I do think t hat the show has improved greatly this season - especially Michael. I enjoy watching her be the captain. There have been more than a few occasions this season where I thought old Michael would return and she'd do what she thought was best, disregarding authority and paying the consequences for her recklessness. I was honestly fearful Michael would lose her captaincy within the first handful of episodes.

Vance: Captain Burnham, since we're speaking somewhat unofficially here, I totally understand if Book and Tarka met some, uh, unfortunate accidents. I mean, the galaxy is still a dangerous place and all after the Burn. ;)

    Burnham: ...

That was a pretty solid episode. Gave it a 7. I liked the “chess match” between Burnham and Book. I also like Captain Burnham. Less action and less crying are great.

Did Owo stand out to anyone else in this episode? She’s never been on my radar before but after the way she punched that guy in the balls and smirked I want to see more of her.

I thought this was pretty entertaining, to be honest. It was a fun, off-beat episode that showcased some fun stuff, had some cool little twists and concepts, and was generally pleasant to watch. It wasn't "City on the Edge of Forever" nor was it "Threshold..." but it was a solid hour of consistently entertaining Star Trek.

I liked the fact that Burnham went against recent type and was going to obey the orders given to her, and it was actually Vance who gave her the suggestion/order to be creative and try to kill two birds with one stone. I thought that was mature writing and good character growth. Vance is my guy...we need more of him on DSC.

This is the second time Owo has been allowed to shine on an away mission. Great stuff there.

I'm a sucker for gambling scenes in movies and shows (I love Casino Royale, for example)...so the parts where they were playing Quasi-Futuristic Poker were pretty cool. I also thought it was cool that the casino owner was not a total stereotype.

I don't care about the visual effects used for the Changeling. Like......not even a little. It's all good.

7/10 It was a lot of fun in a cool popcorn munching sort of way. I dig it.

Is it me, or did the game look almost exactly like "Texas Hold'em"?

In the BtS interview with Will Wheaton, they said they got a Professional Poker Player to help with the Card Playing.

And the setup and cards look like traditional Playing Cards with different fonts and shape.

But other than that, it looks like a Modern Day Casino with a Futuristic motif.

"Texas Hold'em" gets a new name, but it looks like the same basic game.

I was impressed Haz could deal cards while wearing gloves.

This crossed my mind as well, just go in there and take them. Starfleet has no jurisdiction there but go in grab two Starfleet criminals and leave, it will blow over. Leave some latinum behind if it helps. The threat level would warrant it.

I thought this one was a lot fun- good memorable characters and lines, a fun location, Owosekun had a lot to do, and it moved the story forward.

Also, I like Burnham as Captain. They're doing a good job with that.

Burnham might not want to jeopardize her relationship with Haz Mazaro.

He's a valuable Intelligence source and dealer for getting things.

So going in heavy handed might not help her long term cause.

Give Michael Burnham some credit, she does more thinking before acting now a days.

She has shown growth in how she approaches some problems.

No, but given how many times we've seen this crew crumble into emotional turmoil... its being used to the point where there's simply too much of it... that's what erodes quality of Disco if you ask me (along with other stuff I previously mentioned).
Like I said, I have nothing against characters showing their emotional side, but what Disco is doing is going into 'emotional spillage' territory way too often with common sense and logic being overruled... and quite frankly, it makes characters look like idiots and less interesting the more its done.

Is it too much to ask for some 'middle ground' or 'balance'?

The changeling in this episode is likely a more skilled changeling then Odo and he was trapped using the type of force field Garak used on Odo- the same basic concept with regard to finding Changelings-disrupt morphological matrix with energy waves.

Changelings have indeed changed, this episode is evidence for the founders being less isolationist in the 32nd century and spending time outside of the great link for personal reasons, which was rarely done in the 24th century-with founders leaving the link only for official dominion business(as per the STA Gamma Quadrant handbook)

Was it specifically mentioned that this changling was from Odos race? It could have just been a Changing in the general sense, but a completely different race with different abilities

kind of like how the Changlings say “solids” but that could mean human, Klingon, Vulcan, etc. That changeling could have been a race we never saw before.

Did Michael KO the guy who Owo struggled to put down, in one punch? That pissed me off, because it makes Owo look weak.

Rest of the episode was fine. Nothing special, but fine. Loved the Changling sequence. Coulda dialled back the constant overwhelming positive reinforcements between the crew a little.

Not entirely sure why Michael didn't just grab the Isowhateverium and teleport back to the shuttle at the end.

Michael pulling some [babble] out her ass at the end and everyone's like, "OMG YES OF COURSE, [BABBLE] EXPLAINS EVERYTHING" was cringe. That badly needed setup.

Curious about these unknown aliens and not entirely sure why they haven't just jumped to their front door and hailed them yet.

I'm pretty sure Owo was throwing the first two times they fought. Michael didn't even place a bet for those matches.

All they needed to say was "Zora(or Stamets) found something interesting while analyzing the data". Having the person who's been off on an adventure all episode suddenly guess what they should be looking for was lame.
