Is Star Trek: Picard lasting 7 seasons a possibility?

If he's done with the contract (after completing filming of course), and not interested in renewing/continuing, why would he, or the studio care when that piece of info gets out. (IE - It's no big deal... "I signed to do 3 seasons...I did 3 seasons...")

It's not new news in that everyone stated (the Studio, the Producers, and Patrick Stewart) before the first season started production that Patrick Stewart signed/agreed to do 3 seasons of Picard.

I just look at the three seasons of Picard as seven-hour-long Prime Timeline versions of Star Trek XI, XII, and XIII.

40-something minutes times 10 episodes each is how I figure seven hours.

 

Thing is, though, is it actually confirmed, or are all these sources now quoting each other based on that first misunderstanding? Because this article is again quoting the SFX article as proof, and various people associated with the show have already come out to say no, that's not what was said, that's not what was meant. So we still don't actually know for sure.

 

Yeah this article seems to using the same quote from Stewart that Trek Central used. CBS has not yet confirmed it. Gozmodo which originally stated Picard was ending after the third season, took it down last night and posted a new article saying they have reached out to CBS for confirmation: https://gizmodo.com/star-trek-picard-ending-season-3-1848428318. The fact that people involved in the show are acting like this is news to them suggests either no decision on the future of the show has been made, they are teasing us, or the show has been unofficially renewed. Either way, we'll know more soon enough.

Is this maybe just Daniel Craig's "I'd rather slit my wrists before doing another Bond movie"?

I mean, Patrick Stewart is what,.... really old now...? That guy just finished filming TWO seasons of a show focused around him in a row. Not some appearance as an elderly guest star in another man's movie. No, several weeks of shooting, doing (some minimal) action, and being the main focus the entire time. That guy must be exhausted right now.

My take: Season 3 will have a somewhat "proper" ending that could serve as a finale. And in the meantime, a year from now, if Patrick Stewart feels motivated again (+ is satisfied with his reviews + perhaps a boatload of money), he might do another one. I think there's no grand "plan" to end OR continue beyond S3. It all depends on Stewarts health & motivation in the near future.

 

I can imagine Patrick Stewart being done after season 3. It's all he probably signed up to do and his character/story arc will most likely be wrapped at that point. It's not as if Stewart is desperate for cash and I doubt he wants the spend the rest of his life playing Picard, I think it was tough enough for them to persuade him back into the role in the first place after he had ruled out a return for many years after Nemesis.

It's not impossible though that they'll try to continue the show somehow with Jeri Ryan/Seven of Nine and/or the other characters leading it instead.

On the other hand Kurtzman and co seem pretty eager to get that Section 31 show off the ground and with Discovery seemingly secure for the foreseeable future this will be the first chance they'll have to get a new show in to fill in the space left by Picard.

 

Well, in the SFX article Akiva Goldsmith does say he's not sure what is going to happen after season 3, which is doubtful he probably knows but isn't able to tell us until CBS gives a greenlight. But I agree that they probably plot season 3 with an open ending which gives closure but also keeps the door open for another season. The fact that people involved with the show seemed surprised by Trek Central's assumption the show was ending, suggests there is something in the works. There are some [sketchy] rumours online about a potential plot point of the third season that would allow the show to continue even if Stewart decides not to return.

What I do find interesting is CBS is saying nothing. Given the chatter over the past two days, if the show was 100% ending they'd likely confirm it, but the fact their lips are sealed either means a decision hasn't yet been made. Could mean they are in talks with Stewart OR that they are planning something else but won't tell us until around the time season 3 airs.

 

You do realize CBS has announced the renewal (new seasons) of all the other Star Trek series, with the exception of Picard, right? ​

 

Though I also think PIC will run three seasons, I think that even if it wasn't, having already announced two more seasons ahead of the one that was already released is announcement enough. Otherwise, it makes Picard start to sound more like Avatar. "We've only got one movie out, but we have two through five announced!" After a certain point, it just looks ridiculous.

 

I think what we can say is that we don't know season 3 will or will not be the last. Despite there being quite a number of people on Twitter who falsely recall "3 seasons and out" being an official stance from the beginning (but unable to provide a source).

Some interesting statistics ( to me at least) - Stewart needs to make it through 5 seasons (appearing in all episode) to overtake Colm Meaney as the actor with the second most appearances in Trek, and be somewhere into season 11 to overtake Michael Dorn to the top spot. All assuming that the formula will stick to 10 episodes per season.

 

Haha, yeah. Same to a tee. I'm in the three seasons camp (not that I wouldn't want more) but the lack of renewal announcement for Picard feels different when there are two seasons in the queue as-is.

I can't see it getting off the ground anytime soon (Michelle Yeoh is somewhat preoccupied right now -- she's in The Witcher and Avatar 3).

 

Well, that may have been because they had previously announced Picard season 3 back on Star Trek Day but nothing for any of the other shows and they announced Discovery's season 5 renewal later than they had in previous years. That being said, if I were a betting man I'd say it's likely the show will end in season 3. But I'm just making the point that we won't know until CBS makes it official one way or the other.

 

I suppose if you're a 'glass half empty' kind of person you could look at it as being the only series that didn't get a new season announced, and if you're a 'glass half full' person you could look at it as being the only series that got its renewal early.

 

This idea keeps coming up. First, those characters aren't interesting enough to warrant an entire show (there's a reason they're called 'supporting cast'). Second, it seems that they're not even in S3 based on interviews and such. So, it would be odd to write them out of the story for a season, then suddenly make them the focus of a new show.
