So, you're looking for simple mindless entertainment? Star Trek might not be for you.
Star Trek has always been driven by relationships. Again, you might want to pay attention when watching Star Trek if you think relationships aren't "Star Trek".
Not sure what you're watching for.

So then why are previous series, to various degrees, far more compelling? Because the characters are interesting and stories draw you in rather than cheap superficiality that's easy but lame. You know how soap operas have nothing but really dumb and complicated plots about people and you have to pay attention and know all the stupid backstories? That's what Discovery is and it's cringe worthy. Some of the acting and idiotic dialog is that bad, too. I'm not saying it's right at the terrible soap opera level, but too far in that direction.

I'm not you. So I really can't say why it's not working for you.
Broad terms like "lame", "dumb" and "stupid" aren't really telling me much. Though your objection to things that are "complex" and require you to "pay attention" does. Again, sounds like a you problem.

hardly: they literally put a recap right before every episode reminding past plot points that are needed to understand what’s going on.

Every Trek fan should at least check it out, make an informed choice of liking it or not.

OMG what a hot take! We’ve never heard this from anyone before.

“I don’t like DSC or PIC or any of the new Star Trek movies because <insert same reasons fans have been complaining about new iterations of the franchise since 1979 here> “

Maybe you just don’t like it. Your opinion isn’t objective fact, it’s just how you feel. The solution is to find something else to watch.

I don’t like The Expanse, but many of my friends really love it. It’s just not my thing, not an issue with the show’s quality.

Well I'm not a trekkie so I don't know (or care) what's discussed here - nor was I claiming to be novel. But if it is in fact such a common viewpoint, maybe it's an indication something's seriously wrong. (It is.)

You are of course correct - this is understood though. Just giving my opinion that I'd have rather this show be cancelled and replaced with something much better. Or is this a trekkie-only forum where dissention isn't permitted? (I think it is - my other thread here was closed for no real reason. Watch me be banned now or something. :techman:)

Okay, but hating Discovery or [insert currently new Star Trek project] is so openly acceptable here that no one cares. It’s practically the default position of the first decade of any series existing. Just get in line with the other guys making jokes about Burnham crying endlessly.

Your entire effort on this board seems focused on repetitiously crapping on Disco and people who like it. There is a word for that that perfectly fits the situation but I’ll refrain from saying it out loud.

Which is why the trend of Discovery is actually to change a little bit, and bring it in line with more common Trek tropes. So, perhaps it is making changes and people are OK with it now.

Even so, that doesn't mean it is wrong. It just means it is not for you, or others. The beauty of Trek is that it is OK to not like all shows or films.

Not really, I haven't gone ad hominem as far as I recall - just against the show. Btw, I'm sure there were ppl who thought Nemesis and TMP were great movies - good for them. They were complete garbage and similarly that's all I'm doing here. Stating what I consider garbage and as such, should be taken out. :D Maybe if someone had told them Nemesis was utter trash before it was released, that one wouldn't've gotten that whole series of movies cancelled too, as it did. The entire current slate of Star Trek offerings is terrible, overall, and it similarly risks getting the entire franchise cancelled - this time for good.

Very good for them. They are getting a 4k remaster of their film right now.

People who think the new stuff is trash must be in the minority if the shows keep getting renewed and keep getting Spin offs.

CBS is a business, not a charity. Once they start loosing too much money they'll cancel the show. Clearly the last 4 seasons have been making them enough money to be worth the cost, so it's still going.

So it seems you've basically come here to trash-talk about Star Trek.
Something it seems you don't really care for.

Do you go to the Star Wars BBS and hate on that?
How about any number of Soap Opera forums?
Does the new BSG grind your gears as well?
Is your entire existence geared toward bemoaning the things other folks like?

That's a really shallow way to go about ones life.

So Discovery and Picard have been so botched, so unpopular and so unsuccessful that CBS not only decided to renew them for a fifth and a third season, respectively, but also to order in a third live-action series and two animated ones, not to mention withdrawing them all from third-party streaming services so that they could be consolidated as the selling point of their own new platform... damn, if this is what being unsuccessful means, I can't even imagine what being successful is like.

Have some people forgotten how Voyager and Enterprise devolving into utterly predictable, strictly formula comfort-food television rehashing the same old TNG clichés for eleven more seasons was the main reason they kept bleeding audience until Paramount decided to just let Trek die? CBS is ultimately a business. Giving nostalgic comfort food to the very insular group of hardcore Trek fans wishing for a renaissance of the TNG era adhering to the same old formula is only going to satisfy that specific group of people, and probably not even them. If Voyager were made in 2022, a certain subset of the fans would still scream bloody murder at having a woman captain the same way they did 25 years ago. And the same people who attack the real 24th and 32nd century stories for not following up on [insert random plotline] would still attack a "true Trek" series for not making stories on their special interest of choice. Why haven't we seen the Dominion yet? What happened to the Vidiians after they got cured? When will we see Cardassia being rebuilt? The show is crap because it doesn't specifically cater to my interests that are obviously representative of the entire fandom!

Honestly, I don't think it has been forgotten. I think it has been filtered and diluted through memory as being way better than they would actually admit to while it was on the air. And, again, if it isn't for this particular group there is literally more Trek coming than ever before.

Now, as much as I know that many believe that CBS executives are heartless monsters they do not set money on fire just because. Current Trek is either making money or making enough to justify ongoing investment with anticipation of future profits down the road.

well, this must be the reason there are literally five series being released this year, most of them with confirmed more seasons coming afterwards and possibly more spin-offs in the can. Damn, new Trek is a complete failure, the best years of the franchise are definitely between 2004 and 2008. I have spoken.
