First few minutes of the new episode and they have basically kicked Detmer and Owo off of the Discovery. I know they were minor characters, but come on. I'm not happy about that.

Don't be so melodramatic, they didn't show Jett until this episode but it didn't cause me to be all "they kicked her off Discovery".

I'm not being Melodramatic. We've only seen them in the first episode and the ship is in an emergency situation and there are different people at those two posts. I don't even know what this crew of Discovery consists of now.

As for Jett, they really haven't focused on Engineering that much, but it was nice to finally see her again.

Other than the whole Detmer/Owo thing at the beginning of the episode, I really liked that one. It might be my favorite episode of the season so far, especially the story with Felix and the other prisoners. It was really touching, actually, and the scene at the end with the daughter and the family tree hit the spot. I also liked Tarka, even though that story kind of reminded me of the TNG episode Relics, even with Stamets saying that Tarka scares him. As for Culber, one must ask the question, who councils the councelor? Looks like Culber is at a breaking point.

This episode gets a 9 from me.

A mature and sophisticated episode. Not the direction I had hoped for when the season began, but I really like the handling of the story progression, the facets we saw of Burnham, Book, Culber, and others, and the episode's refusal to settle for the easiest ways out of the episodic plot elements. An easy 10 for me.

You do know this was filmed during the pandemic right? Its possible that Emily coutts and Oyin olajedo had to isolate because they were at an exposure site or something.

USS Janeway! ENT-like Vulcan cruiser T'Pau 1000 years later!
Is Mah Bu supposed to be Mab-Bu?
Metrons, Nacene, Iconian survivors (!), oh and the Q made no contact in 600 years...
    Kovich great as always!
We have to get out of here, quickly, now that the asylum discussion is over, let's go run.......or not, and hear the guy's story first, no rush... (like last week)
It was the DMA that was supposed to hit the asteroid - instead they're pushed into their star?!
The prisoner wanting his punishment and returning the family tree ball to the daughter was great!

Pretty uneven episode overall, but a very intriguing ending. It's good to see Shawn Doyle scumming it up again after his superb stint on The Expanse a few years ago, and the whole "Captain Ahab" angle on Book is coming into sharp focus now.

I'll admit, I'm bummed that we've seen so little Detmer or Owo. Feels weird - and less foreseen on the creative end than Bryce, whose diminished screentime is brought up directly by linking him to Lieutenant Christopher. Is there any chance one or both of them came down with COVID or something?

Oh, and that mention that the Q haven't been heard from in 600 years is totally going to click with Picard Season 2 somehow. inb4 "by 2500, the Continuum is evolving into something even more transcendent."

Maybe, I don't know what the situation was. All I know is this is episode 5 and they have not been seen in 4 episodes now, especially in this one where we actually did return to the bridge of the Discovery.

Also, wasn't Season 3 also filmed in a middle of a pandemic. They gave Detmer/Owo some good screen time last season.

Love the references to the Metrons (Arena), Nacene (Caretaker) and the Iconians (Contagion) as possible suspects for the DMA. I'm surprised they didn't mention the Organians.

Season 3 wrapped production in February 2020, juuuust before the Pandemic. The post-production was a different story.

Couple of stray observations before I forget:

    • Tig Notaro is now cited as main cast for the episodes she appears in. Discovery's main cast list continues to be as elastic as heck.
    • "I've got a thing on my forehead, friend. Drink my whiskey and trust me."
    • Literally thought of @NCC-73515 when Felix spent a few moments with Michael talking about the orb during the escape sequence.

Could the expert dude have caused the DMA with similarly dangerous experiments while trying to create a better spore drive that anyone can pilot? When Book kinda called him out and he brushed it off, that seemed like it means something :D

People think of me when they watch Disco XD
Thanks, that's funny! But the worst of these moments was still in my favorite of the new shows: PIC near the end, when General Oh tells them to now really prepare to totally get ready to fire on the colony very soonish... XD

Mary Wiseman out of the credits. Tig Notaro in.

I know about half the cast listed in the opening credits only appear when they're in the episode, but Wiseman, Jones and Rapp all got credit in previous seasons when they didn't appear. How long is Wiseman supposed to be gone?
