Captain Kirk heading to space.. for real!

Takei obviously thinks about it a lot more than Shatner does.

 

Shatner has expressed numerous times he didn't have anything to with Takei's venom; there's things going on during the making of Star Trek which had nothing to do with Takei, Doohan, Keonig, and especially Nichols. He was championing Takei to have a more prominent role on Star Trek in the second season, but instead Takei took a movie role which cost him more screen time and was given to Keonig. Also, the show was failing and Shatner was the face of the show and along with the showrunners they made decisions to make changes on set which cost the day players some screen time but it wasn't the ensemble like TNG, the cast was Kelley, and Nimoy. Not only that Nimoy had sabotage Doohan's lines many times over in the series. There's no reason for the science officer talking engineering stuff when the Chief Engineer is right in front of the Star. Takei and those actors should've been praising Shatner than crapping on him because the truth is, all he had to do was refuse to work with them again. And that's it! He didn't.

 

Takei looks bitter and small, while Shatner enjoyed the attention of the build up to this thing way, way too much.

So Shatner's scrambling for all the attention he can get, and Takei hates Bill for being that way - and succeeding at it.

Sounds like they're basically the same people they were in the 60's.. surprise!

What's so wrong with just saying he hopes/is glad everyone including Bill returns/ed safely, and be done with it. Why is that so hard?

How long before he launches a campaign to send "Captain Sulu" up in a Virgin Galactic rocket? Only to get bitter over the deafening silence it generates..

 

I like Takei more as a person but damn, he comes off as a lot more petty and that damages his "Uncle George" image. Just give it a rest for a few, George. You have bigger fish to fry and neither of you guys are young, so don't waste time you no longer have.

 

Shatner didn't seem to be scrambling for all the attention. He did a few interviews right before and never talked of it before it was announced. He was genuinely moved by the experience and contemplated by himself at first when they landed until Bezos walked up to him. He was basically standing alone until then. I think he was humbled by the short journey like anyone else would be. Takei in the other hand is being a complete jerk and it smacks of his usual jealousy.

 

Shatner can do no right in Takei’s eyes. Takei is consumed by his cultivated grudge and never misses a chance to badmouth Shatner. Meanwhile Shatner just gets on with his life rather than retaliate.

 

Shatner went up in space; Takei just occupies space. Shatner wins!

 

I’m honestly surprised Takei didn’t say something before Shatner went up. But yeah, it makes him look petty and small.

Just don’t say anything. It’s not that hard.

 

I've always thought George Takei comes across a little bit disingenuous when it comes to Star Trek. He loves to talk about how he saw the writing in the series as unique / great and that it was a quality show that he was really proud to be a part of but like any other actor when a better opportunity comes along he takes it and I'm talking about his part in the John Wayne film The Green Berets. Now it's completely understandable why George Takei would jump at such an opportunity in 1967; but afterwards to act like he was always in Star Trek the Original Series when he wasn't because of this opportunity, again to me it comes across as a little disingenuous for him to try and claim he so loved Star Trek over everything else he did.

And overall I have to say William Shatner is a more consummate actor than George Takei will ever be. I say that because even after Star Trek when he was living in a truck oh, he took whatever acting jobs he could get to pay the bills and stay in the profession he loved. You really have to be able to sublimate your ego to take a job that is being the host and narrator of high school films teaching kids about some aspect of History, geography or Society.

Somehow I don't see George Takei even considering taking a job like that no matter what the situation was. If anything that shows how dedicated William Shatner was to his craft in that he would do anything to keep his hand in some aspect of it even when he was not at the top of the Heap. Over the years he managed to rehabilitate his career more than once. Now that doesn't mean he's a perfect human being, but let's be honest, most actors of his era only knew how to promote themselves to keep themselves in the public eye and they figured every other actor would be doing the same and not expecting someone to go to bat for them all the time; and if they are true actors they will find a way to get the parts they eventually want.

So yeah I don't have a lot of respect for George Takei in this situation because it seems he's the one who really wants to keep the fued going just because it gives him some time in the Limelight again.

 

At this point if you don't know Shatner has a huge ego and was an alpha male and douchebag to some actors in TOS then you haven't been a fan of this franchise for more than maybe a few hours. He's a known quantity, has been a target of pop culture for decades and people know how he spouts off at the mouth about social topics on Twitter. Takei has known the man for 56 years and if he can't let it go after this long then he's just letting Shatner look like the classy hero.

I don't like some of the things Shatner says and does but HE'S not the one going after George Takei every time the latter's name gets whispered.

 

Still don't see any evidence that he was a douchebag. He was the star of the show, top billing, and it wasn't an ensemble. The secondary cast were bit players that were in a fraction of the episodes. They were lucky they were even brought back for the movies. All any of them honestly needed was Kirk, Spock, McCoy and maybe Scotty with a bunch of un-named background support actors. Thank the 70s convention scene that anyone remembers them at all. Shatner didn't personally screw them over. The "legend" has been much overblown.

Exactly. He was the star. That's what he was getting paid for. Nimoy was 2nd and Deforest 3rd. The other actors were supporting actors. Instead of being grateful for being on one of or maybe greatest science fiction show in history they are bitter. They all got be in the movies to and they all got their little bits of sometimes really good scenes to play. They should grateful to have been part of something so special.

 

The impression I got from the post-space flight images was that Shatner really was overcome with emotions and wasn't purposely milking it for all the media attention it was worth (though he is of course an actor, so you can never be quite sure). And like it or not, he is the absolute star of Star Trek, and him going into space at 90 years old? Of course al the journalists are flocking to him first ask him questions.

 

I know I would have. No offense to the other passengers, but you aren't WILLIAM SHATNER.

 

Did Shatner actually say Nimoy stole Doohan's lines? Like Nimoy went up to GR and demand he got extra lines from Doohan. And never once did Shatner count lines or demand extra lines?
Have all this time we've been told lies about Shatner doing this and it was all Nimoy. How did Nimoy pull the wool over Takei, Doohan, Nichol's eyes? My gosh Nimoy is sneaky..
Anyway I don't think Takei's and Doohan's main beef with Shatner was that he stole lines but treated them like scum, forgot their names, refused to answer phone calls or acknowledge their existence. I mean that was what Doohan said in his book as well as saying Shatner made his character look a bit of a fool in TFF.

Anyway no matter how Shatner treats his fans, cast members he is still a legend. Going up in space at age 90. Still performing and going to conventions. Fantastic.

 

The comedy in that movie was studio mandated.... Not Bill's fault.

It wasn't like now. Casts didn't all befriend each other and hang out after shooting. They came, did their jobs, and went home. They all didn't shoot at the same time, or with the same people constantly. They didn't socialize at work. They did their jobs. They are mad that Shatner wasn't their friend, and saw them as coworkers and acquaintances? Boo hoo....

And the story I've always heard is that Shatner and Nimoy were both lone counting and making demands in competition with each other.... Whoever the lines came from was just collateral damage.

 

I don't think he even saw them as coworkers. Just scum. Like you and me. LOL
