Are Blu del Barrio and Ian Alexander series regulars in season 4?

I'm only halfway through season 3 but I have to assume that Gray becomes a compelling character in the latter half judging by people on here hoping to see him return. Because right now he's a nothing character, imo.

 

Well, without going into detail (and working off fuzzy memory), I don't think Gray is that interesting of a character, as opposed to his relationship with Adira. I'm really struggling to understand if Gray is even alive and not just some affectation of Adira's struggling mind, but that's part of their journey on the show.

Season 4 will, presumably, go more in-depth into what Gray truly is, if that even matters. In a way, his journey mirrors that of Culber, another person who seems to have been killed and then brought back via the memory of another character (is Culber the original Culber?). Whether Culber is the original Culber, or Gray the original Gray, doesn't really matter if they continue to exist as independent characters interacting with their environment in their place.

Gray obviously actually exists on some level given the Kelpien holodeck could detect him and rendered him as a hologram.

Well, in TOS Rand was supposed to be a main cast member, and the yeoman isn't really a bridge officer. Then DS9 had Quark...

 

Quark is arguably a department head since he does run the station's bar.

 

Supposed to be. Didn't really work out. And as Captain's yeoman she's bridge personnel. Smith or Jones was on the bridge too. Not sure about Colt.
DS9 isn't "ship based".

 

I'm pretty sure it was hinted at during the DISCOVERY part of the Star Trek Day event that Gray was going to get a physical body at some point in the new season.

 

TOS definately. VOYAGER and ENTERPRISE? I don't know. I'll grant that they were good in their own way. Certainly better than the shows being made now, but they weren't on par with TOS. At least I don't think so.

DIS is not the first ship-based live-action ST series with a main cast of characters who aren't all bridge officers or department heads.

That honor goes to DS9 -- which was both ship-based and station-based, because of the Defiant. DS9's primary characters included Quark (a civilian -- not a department head) and Jake (a civilian who pursues a career as a freelance journalist).

However, the fact that DIS goes even further with not making its primary cast all bridge officers or department heads IS definitely something it deserves a lot of credit for, and it enriches the show.

 

Nothing ever will be like TOS. And it can never be. Times have changed, art has changed and it is time to move forward, not look backward.

 

Backward is the only way to look.
