Looks like it was only for the first 18,000 fans in attendance. Yankee Stadium holds, what, nearly 50,000 people and is generally close to sold-out every game?

edit: According to ESPN, there were 39,088 fans in attendance yesterday, so at least some percentage of the remaining 21,088 people wish they'd beat MLB through the gate so they could get some of that sweet, sweet bobblehead action.

It's kinda like ticket scalpers hanging out before the game, only in reverse. $$

I don't understand why the MLBPA is complaining about how short the 2020 season was.

Surely they understand how lucky we were to even have a 2020 season IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Best news I've heard all day:

    "Joe West is retiring".

West, Hernandez and Bucknor are the top three and epic suckage for umpires. Lots (and I mean LOTS) of others are turrible, most of them in fact, but those 3 are the benchmark for shitty umpires to aspire to.

Robots are the answer, bring on the robots. ;)

Then we can question/argue over their programing.

Far as I'm concerned, they can take their own sweet time with the robot umpires.

Sure, umpires do make mistakes, and some of them are consistently bad, but that human element is a part of the game and IMHO should not be messed with. The way you deal with lousy umps is to get BETTER ones, not eliminate all of them.

I mean, what's next? Robot players?

"Today the Office of the Commissioner handed down a 30-game suspension for New York Yankees' robotic infielder A-R0D after tests showed he was running Android 15 instead of the League-authorized Android 14, and was also using the controversial 'Dinger' app..."

An auto-strike zone is pretty much what most of us are talking about re: robot umps. If there's an accurate way to show balls & strikes, then that should be put into effect.

The problem with MLB is, they have no actual control over which umps call what games (NFL has a slight bit of control over bad refs).

For other things like safe/out calls at the 4 bases, human umps will suffice, plus an improved replay system. They need a a few more cameras with better angles for fair/foul calls and the like.

I still say they need to either hang a camera dead over home plate or rectify the swing/no swing rule. The current rule is idiotically vague and relies on "judgement", which most umps really don't have (ie: flipping a coin). Making the rule state that the bat needs to "cross" the foul line would give corner umps a clear line of sight on those calls.

But if we need to go full Skynet™, go FULL Skynet™

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree. No robots.

The human element is great and all until it affects wins and losses, which should only be determined by the performances of the teams.

Got to make sure your team doesn’t put itself in a position to be undone by a bad call.

Bad calls can happen at any time, doesn't matter if the game is tied or if you're up by ten.

I don't trust the robot element to make the right call either. So, might as well eliminate umpires all together.
