    A fun behind-the-scenes feature showing Jason Momoa training to become Duncan Idaho:

    The New Scientist film reviewer, Davide Abbatescianni doesn't like the film very much. Oddly, he describes Jessica as a "mystic", which must mean something to him other than to the rest of us. The dictionary definition of a mystic is "someone who seeks by contemplation and self-surrender to obtain unity with or absorption into the Deity or the absolute, or who believes in the spiritual apprehension of truths that are beyond the intellect". Really, where did he get that notion about Jessica from? The Bene Gesserit use religion as a tool to advance their own plans for the future of mankind not to commune with some invisible holy spirit.

    His summing up is "Dune fails to deliver the ecological, anti-colonialist spirit of the original novel, nor does it provide an urgent, fresh take that would justify retelling its epic vicissitudes. In short: too much action, not nearly enough heart." Sorry, pal, I don't think you've read the book like you imply you have. If you did, it must have been before your critical reading skills had developed. I don't think you got it at all.

    Right as I clicked "Play" someone started cutting onions. And then the end.

    I can not get used to seeing Momoa without the beard.

    My favourite bit was the sideways dig at the GoT finale. :lol:

    I'm actually surprised so few trekbbs members have seen it. Only 3 people have voted in the rating thread. I thought there was more of a worldwide audience here.

    Yeah, I know we have plenty of Europeans on this board. I expected more of a response from them.

    Is there really a crossover between Trek and Dune fandom though? They are very different. Patrick Stewart even once stated that he just doesn't really like the book Dune despite being Gurney Halleck in the 1984 movie. (I know he's not really into sci-fi in general, but there was enough material in both Trek and X-Men that obviously kept Sir Patrick's interest over the years).

    What a weird hypothesis. Star Trek fans don't like Dune, because Patrick Stewart doesn't, he says on a 125 page thread about Dune on a science fiction forum, while Dune is the number 1 movie in (nearly?) every country it is currently released in.

    I have noticed more people posting reviews in this thread and not going to the spoiler/rating thread.

    It always amazes me how different the BTS footage of scenes being filmed looks, compared to what we see in the movie/TV show itself. It's amazing how much subtle manipulation there is of the image that you don't really notice in the final product.

    I personally love the Dune books (well, the first three and the sidequels co-written by Herbert's son), and while they aren't very similar to Star Trek I don't see any reason why many people couldn't be fans of both.

    Yeah. Such a weird thing to claim.

    Herbert was part of one of the letter writing campaigns that saved Trek, and Trek has made numerous references to his books over the years.

    @wayoung

    The movie isn’t released here in New Zealand until OCT 21 - so until then, I won’t be able to post a rating.

    But - come 21 Oct, I will!

    There was a planet Arrakis on Voyager. Well, they spelled it differently, but it was pronounced the same.
