I don't mind development of background characters but yeah, TOS and ENT worked just fine by focusing primarily on their respective Main 3s. Even VOY basically left Chakotay, Harry and B'Elanna hanging to focus on The Doctor, Seven and Janeway.

A well-written show can do a great deal to richly flesh out its cast in a shorter-season format.

In TOS, Uhura wasn't one of the show's main cast, which is why she never got her own episode. If they've made her main cast in SNW, it implies they have something of note in mind for her.

True, the early seasons of Game of Thrones, for example, managed to fit a very large cast of characters into 10 episodes, though they had the advantage of having a clear arc for every major character.
We can only hope SNW will manage that too.

I hope you are right, not only do I look forward of seeing more of Uhura, but I also tend to prefer ensemble casts to shows that focus on one or two main characters.

Well, most of these characters have a clear end to their story arc in SNW:

    Pike: Fleet Captain, Beep Beep
    Spock: TOS
    Chapel: TOS
    Uhura: TOS

The others are blank slates, but that makes it more interesting.

And M'Benga. He ends up on the Enterprise yet again by 2267 so even if he's not there in Season 1 for whatever reason we know good and well where he ends up by Season 2.

"Uhura occupies the communications station on the Enterprise under Pike and then she occupies it some more under Kirk" isn't really a character arc though...

This is a little bit placated with the knowledge that she's a Cadet at the outset, and a full Lieutenant in TOS, a reasonable career trajectory whether the show is set in 2258 or 2261. We can even presume that she turns down promotions to remain on the Enterprise.

I'm expecting a Worf-like event for M'Benga ("you'll never make Captain!") that results in his eventual demotion or at least high-level mark on his record for doing some heroic act that skirts the line of what Starfleet expects of him. Perhaps Uhura (and Spock) will do similar things that result in similar black marks as explanations for supposed career cool-offs.

I just hope the new Uhura is interesting enough for people to want a more deeper look. With new actors you never know which ones will be more interesting and which ones will be okay. If we are talking Spock much I kind of like more between him and Number 1 due to their interactions in the Short Trek. They already got chemistry and the series hasn't even started. With Uhura I would love to see more of her artistic side like her singing. What if she wanted to be a singer growing up but for some reason went into Starfleet instead. She is also just a cadet so she spends a lot of time studying because she is still in school. Maybe the security officer lady is helping train her in terms of physical training which she would also need to be good at in order to graduate.

I'm sure she will be. The writers of all the current-generation of shows seem rightly focused on utilizing the full ensemble cast and not just focusing on 2 or 3. All the characters have stories to tell. They really should be told.

Outside of the novels and other tie-in products for the TOS crew, for example, we really know next-to-nothing of the characters below the big 3 and, IMO, did the show a great disservice (although we probably would have seen a little more had the show not gotten cancelled). As those characters slowly start to trickle in this new show, I'm hoping we get to see more of all their back-stories.

The characters have only those "stories to be told" that the writers give them.

I want to see SNW Uhura move from Communications to Navigation for a time (to account for the Corbomite gold and her acting as relief navigator for short periods in Season One TOS).

It's a deep cut that subverts modern-day audience expectations about the character, who are so used to seeing her as solely a communication specialist.

As a cadet it makes sense that you might see her doing time in other places as well. I mean most Starfleet officers seem to be pretty well rounded in their skill sets. We have seen her work on circuits as well so maybe she spends some time in main engineering also.

Spock himself serves in the command division during the timeframe of "WNMHGB(TOS)," which isn't long after Kirk takes command. It's possible Spock accepts a department change in 2265 since he's no longer serving alongside Pike and chooses to strike out on a new course in his career but quickly realizes how much the new Captain needs him to perform his old science duties and switches back to sciences blue by 2266.

In a parallel universe, or paralel evren, if you will, Spock stayed on the star track.
