I just checked the transcript for No Small Parts, and Janeway doesn't get a single mention. In fact, I double-checked all of Lower Decks transcripts, and she's only mentioned in Envoys (via the Janeway Protocol), We'll Always Have Tom Paris (Boimler has her signature), and this episode (ten times, confusing Freeman for Janeway). Obviously it's a continuation of the Enterprise joke from No Small Parts, but there's been no prior indication that Captain Janeway faced the Pakleds before.

    oh my.

By the way, I’m now in season 2 of my DS9 rewatch and it’s amazing how many Pakled show up in background. I guess their world is relatively close to Bajor and they have a trading route that brings them on the station.

I was going to give this episode a 7. The Pakled stuff was dumb, but I really liked Boimler's story and the Anomaly Consolidation duty stuff just to show how close the lower deckers are with each other. How they converged was nice and it was nice to see Boimler finally taking charge and being a leader.

Then we got the Armus gag and I actually laughed. That was a great random ending that bumped this episode up to a 8.

Going with an 8 this week. it was enjoyable, but not as much as last weeks episode, even with the Dooplers.

like some have already said, good character development. Boimler is a true leader and not just a suck up like the "Redshirts," doing what you have to do to get things done like having to resort to slapstick, instead of just making a speech. Speeches are fine, but like everything time and place, man.

Poor Tendi, her enthusiasm just getting stomped on by Matiner and Rutherford. Though they did have good reason to be salty about it.

Yes! Kayshon is still here, and glad they're still using him. Happy they are incorporating more background characters into storylines. We call ourselves the Redshirts, makes us sound invincible. Glad Boimler set them straight.

    D Bridge Boimler

That was our classified Starfleet gift Shop, Rumdar airlocking himself, yeah checks out.

We outsmarted Captain Janeway! I don't have a big enough helmet for that. loving the Pakled leadership structure, then revolution, then back to big helmets

I swear one of the pigs that came out of the storybook was dressed like Dennis the Menace, blue and white striped shirt with red overalls.

Armus, wow! deep cut, practically came out of nowhere!

    only four more episodes left.

Isn’t it interesting how this show has a peck for referring to some of the worst episodes of Star Trek, making fun of them and making them more acceptable in retrospect?

First threshold, now this. The real challenge would be making fun of Shades of Grey, of course.

The idea of Lower Decks is it celebrates the silliness of Star Trek rather than trying to pretend it doesn't exist.

Not just any Kzin from "The Slaver Weapon", but a screen capture I saw demonstrated he also drooped his fish fin ears like the bedraggled telepath!

Somebody commenting upon a YouTube review page claimed he sounded a bit like Brak from "Space Ghost Coast to Coast". Can anybody confirm or refute that? Whenever I think of that show and Brak specifically, I remember him asking, "Hey! Have you ever had a bologna wrapped wiener?! Boy, oh boy!" Sounds so lewd out of context! Now imagine our Kzinti redshirt blurting that in the mess hall!

"Oh no! I'm big beyond belief!"
That line being said in Rutherford"s "fat" voice has been getting chuckles from me all day.

I think I understand somewhat why Mariner hates Jennifer.

Boimler doesn't have muscles, they just padded his uniform. I loved how he kept injuring himself with food to calm Scorpi-Tendi.

Was the padded uniform a wink at the padded costumes used on TNG?

    Here's the shot in question.

He even mimicked the forlorn eyes and the dark circles under them! HA! Great!

So the Pakleds are a race of dumb brutish warriors tooling around the galaxy in ramshackle scavenged starships.

Do we, in fact, have Star Trek's Orks?

From what I've read, all the male uniforms from TNG to VOY were padded. :)

As for this episode, I loved it. Laughed my ass off.

Is it just me or did the leader of the Redshirts not only have 80s Shatner hair but was doing a Kirk impression?

I tend to agree, but IMO he'd need some live action showrunning experience. He's got a great sense of writing, but he'll need to learn about how the overall thing works before he'd be handed the reins. They didn't give Dave Filoni a senior creative position in the Star Wars franchise until he'd done The Mandalorian to prove he can handle more than just animation, and I sense the same sort of skillset in McMahon. With the right amount of time and luck, McMahon could be a better unifying creative force than the current people. Or should be.

They were space Orcs long before DISCO. TNG got the ball rolling on that. I miss the smart Klingons from TOS. I think Mariner got it right in Season one, even though she was drunk.
