One of the weakness of Picard and Discovery is that the writers have a superficial definition of how to have a diverse cast. I don’t think they care about real diversity like TNG or DS9. So, It now seems like not a coincidence they have made Uhura in Strange New Worlds , now very masculine looking and androgynous , when Uhura from TOS and the Kelvin movies has always been more feminine and girlish and I say this as a no offence to the actress playing Uhura in Strange New World (Celia rose Gooding) since she did not make the decision. Strange new world made the decision.

I think strange new worlds will make Uhura gay or bi sexual and put here in a relationship with Erica Ortegas. However, that is a new character, so it is fine in that content, but Uhura is not a new character. Also the actress who plays Uhura in Strange new worlds is a non binary bi sexual woman and this new shows (Discovery and Picard) tend to only cast those type of actors where the characters are actually LGBTQ on the show, which is why I am more convinced that Uhura will be gay in Strange New Worlds

Now I have no bone to pick with how anyone wants to look or what appeals to them since we do live in society of tolerance, however that is not Uhura to me. I have never imagined Uhura as a non binary masculine looking girl. Uhura to me has always been very feminine with zero tom boy traits. Celia Rose Gooding should have been a new character or they could have made her look more like the actual Uhura counterparts from TOS and the Kelvinverse or they could have just not cast a non-binary bisexual actress for the role of Uhura or do cast the Celia in a new role.

Just because young Uhura is rocking a short haircut (which is not uncommon among black women of all ages), she is suddenly "very masculine and androgynous?"

    Bullshit.

I think OP may be misinterpreting her look. This version of Uhura clearly has traditionally "feminine" cosmetics including glossy lipstick as well as eye shadow in the one and only split-second clip of her that has been released so far. Is it the short hairstyle? Because I've known many black women who sported that type of hairdo with no intention of looking "masculine" at all.

You've seen a still image of a character with short hair. Might want to pump the brakes on your interpretation of a single image. People do change hairstyles.

And if she is any of the things you're complaining about... who cares? It is a new show with new interpretations of the characters.

No it is not bullshit, truthfully, it is the worst stereotype of gay women that they all have short hair cuts and since Kurtzman does have a habit for going for the most generic stereotypes of people in his attempt to push what he sees as more diversity, women with short haircut been automatically gay is the easiest give away on a how like his.

this has already been done twice in Discovery. And Like I said, the actress is a non-binary bisexual woman and one of the many common aspects on non-binary people is that they are or can be androgynous since the whole point of non binary is that they dont really want to fall into the space of been separately male or separately female. I really don't think they cast an LBTQ non binary actress in this role without a reason that will not matter to the show.

Lots of women in Africa wear their hair short because of the oppressive heat. Next thing you're going to expect me to believe is that Uhura is from Africa...

    Oh, wait... she is...

I was going to say we had nowhere near enough info to make a judgement, but given recently casting practices, this is disturbing plausible.

Dammit it was a bungalow and only my ankles are broken.
How exactly is Next Gen or DS9 more diverse then Discovery?

I am struggling and we're not even at the gayhura bit yet.

    Saved me some typing. Thanks!

<--- And look at my hair, in the profile, minus the sideburns. What would you say about me?

Can we please not use hair to identify gender or sexual orientation?

And how can you be "bisexual" if you're "non-binary"? If you don't identify with a gender, then "same sex" and "opposite sex" become irrelevant. It sounds to me like you're just trying to add as many labels as possible...

... because of a haircut. "She's a bisexual, non-binary everything!" No. Now, if she is (or they are) in SNW and it's established, then okay, but I'm going to automatically assume that just because of a haircut.

I would say first of all, discussion of SNW goes into Future of Trek until it gets its own forum.

But rather than move this, I’m going to close it because…well…it’s pretty damned offensive.
