I believe that people talk about it a great deal.

Yes, including one that had a missing matte painting (showing the studio rafters instead of the rest of the Enterprise) and Kirk in a spacesuit and helmet that don't match the ones he uses in the very next scene. ;)

I still wonder if those SLV-specific scenes still exist on film in wide aspect ratio in the Paramount archives.

The SLV is the only version with the full, unedited scene with Kirk and McCoy in Kirk's quarters, innit?

    "And another thing..."
    "Get out of here, Bones."
"As ship's doctor, I am now discussing the subject...of command fitness."

I wish that scene could somehow be edited back into the DE. There's really no reason to chop it up.

I love that scene. Bones going all TOS on Kirk for displaying what the former sees as inappropriate behavior.

I managed to add it back but it's a horror show. The quality of the outtake on the DVD is poor, I had to add the hum of the ship, and the music from Decker's departure bleeds into Kirk's dialogue on the DE so I had to stretch it out across the whole scene. Sounds weird.

Why not just use the whole alternate take, like the SLV, up until "And I intend to keep her?" I know it's because it's what I was used to growing up, but I think McCoy's reading in the theatrical version/DE is way too strong, especially paired with the framing where he and Kirk are just standing at attention looking at each other. Sure, it's a little weird for Kirk's "Make your point" to be said off-screen, but I feel like keeping focus on McCoy works better in the moment.

Maybe for GenXers that grew up with the originals, but I doubt it for a lot of younger fans who only grew up with the revised versions. And I bet if you showed them the originals they’d say they prefer the revised version. Just like how some here have an affinity for the SLV because they grew up with that VHS.

Not so much a matter of ego, I suspect, as a matter of vindictiveness against the ex-wife who co-edited all three original versions of the films, only to then all but wipe him out in divorce court. No rerelease of the original versions = not another cent in royalty payments.

As a more casual fan of TMP, I really liked what they did on The Director's Edition DVD back in the day. They had a cut that Wise was satisfied with, and they had pretty extensive deleted scenes in the bonus features that took the theatrical cut and SLV material into account. I was a little disappointed that none of that made it into the Blu-ray set, and I hope that all of the material is there on the 4K set, even if it is not incorporated into separate cuts of the movie.

I highly doubt that’s the case, given that he’s also made editing revisions to the prequels (the most baffling and jarring being AOTC).

I was using the DE Dvd outtakes in HD upscaled draft. I suppose I could try running the SLV until the first camera change. Still the problem of trailing off Decker's music though.

You would think in an era of deep fakes this would be an easy fix…but eyes are easier to fool than ears…and why radio is truly more ‘visual’

Simple if you have a soundtrack with a separate music track!

Depending on how much the music bleeds into separate channels, it could be feasible. Thats how I was able to swap out the Bond theme in this clip and replace it with music that was originally written and recorded for this scene:

An OHMSS reference in a TMP thread? I love it.

Traci is my favourite Bond Girl by a mile. Who needs martial arts when you can glass a henchman with a champagne bottle?

That's not how it works. Marcia Lucas was paid for her editing work and paid in her divorce settlement. If she was entitled to anything else related to the films, she would still be entitled to it. Revising a work does not void previous financial obligations tied to that work.

Maybe the studio should just put the SLV as it was shown on ABC on Paramount+ for the fans that like it. It's easy and cheap for these studios to put content online. There needs to be more ROI for physical media, which I believe they'd never get if they bothered to put the SLV on a disc.

Yeah, either bundle all three edits together in one release or put the 1983 SLV version on Paramount+ to stream.
