Sweet. While I prefer overall the TV cut with the extra footage (even the one with the incomplete f/x with studio background), the new f/x shots and exteriors for the Enterprise and VGER make up for it . WIll they keep the new sound effects or will the originals be put back? The computer voice was too frequent and harsh, but still preferable to what it was replaced with.
The scene where Ilia’s tricorder drops always looked higher def’ than the rest of the film for some reason
My guess is because the stuff with the probe is both blown out with the bright lighting and a bit grainy from the number of optical prints it took to compose the scene. I always loved that transition, the sound also really helps sell it as well, going from noisy and loud to simply the tricorder clattering to the ground.
I can't wait to get a copy of the theatrical edition in September on UHD. I'll check out the DE on Paramount+, might pick it up depending on the special features.
I prefer the theatrical edition. That RED ALERT... RED ALERT... RED ALERT is epic, it's replacement is weak.
Also, the superimposed stardate should be 7412.0 (+ 12 hours to launch + 1.8 after = 7412.6 of the first log entry) — not 7410.2. Unnecessary imperfections like that really take you out of the picture. (What am I saying, it’s TMP. Either edition is fine if you’d like to revisit the excellent parts, such as the music or the VFX.)
The film, like Dune, has good bones, but need a good edit to bring it out. Most Star Trek fans love some of the sections that drag, but a good edit would cut out a lot of that drag and restore (from the TV version) some of the dialog scenes.
