Trying to make the nacelles look more primitive, I stole these from the "USS Bonaventure" design from the TAS "Time Trap"
The Franz Joseph “kit bash” idea came straight from Jefferies. He was the one who literally called the nacelles "quick change units". The Enterprise is made up of a "primary" and "secondary" hull - it couldn't be more literally modular. When you add in the fact that Franz Joseph consulted with Jefferies on Roddenberry’s Genesis II production, it’s clear he had the benefit of discussing what he was doing with Jefferies himself. He understood what Jefferies intended. Well, I was going for a kitbash of the only other TOS ship that was canon: The Space cruiser Aurora...
Just thinking: In "Way to Eden" they kitbashed the Tholian ship into the Aurora by putting nacelles from the AMT Enterprise onto the hull, attached with bits of the Klingon Battle Cruiser. Now, I can't find any good pictures of the kitbashed model, but it seems to me that they've put 6 outsized intercoolers projecting from the nacelles. Seems to me that if you're going for a less advanced-previous generation nacelle design, that might be something you'd want to consider. Perhaps with the 1st Pilot end cap design from "The Cage?"
^^ Actually if you look at the nacelles of my Antares you’ll something along those lines. I am working on an idea for the Astral Queen and I should have something to show soon. I again used the idea of cutting and shaping a form out of a block of wood then adding bits and pieces to it. I can say it’s quite different from my first attempt. And from the side the silhouette even sort of echoes the idea of a boat. I quickly looked at some pics of tramp steamers for a general sense of concept. I’ve ditched the quad nacelle arrangement and gone back to a twin setup. If this works out then either my Antares miniature or the Astral Queen could also serve later as the Beagle from “Bread And Circuses” and/or the Diedre from “Friday’s Child.”

I’m blanking. I know I saw the film ages ago, but I also remember exclaiming WTF often enough during it and not making any effort whatsoever to remember the movie. I remember flying taxis, Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, a blue alien with bricks in her gut, and then it gets weirder and blurry.
Its styling was a very... European, for lack of a better description. I was personally memorized by it, simply because I had never seen anything quite like it before, either in story or characterization. Zorg and Ruby Rhod were a little over the top for me, but the music in that movie was freakin' amazing!
Interesting. So the idea that this was a freighter a la the Woden came before the idea that this was a 20th century sleeper ship...

It's taking shape. A few more small elements to go then colouring. For something that would barely be seen I'm trying to resist getting fancy or adding too much detail. Of course, I didn’t want it to look like a boat, but I wanted it to maybe evoke something familiar. I also hoped the ship’s general purpose might also telegraph from the shape, suggesting a transport of cargo and people. Hmm… Maybe there should be a book, a collection of short stories called Tales Of The Astral Queen. Sounds like pulp sci-fi.
Throw some nacelles on the Fifth Element ship... I'm not saying it's an intentional copy, just that it reminds me... --Alex
