Are you happy with the Star Trek we have, do you want more? If there would be no new Star Trek material coming, would you be satisfied with the things we already have? (with the exception that current storylines need to be resolved first)

I'm a TNG fanboy and have interest in TOS, other that that I'm not currently interested in other Star Trek series.
Currently means that situation may change?

My annual TNG marathon and when I get around to it rewatch of TOS is enough right now. Perhaps DS9 some day, even VGR but the brand spanking new series are just so different.

Is it even possible to reach the level of awesome the 90s series had? But that's not the question here, the topic title is:
Happy with Star Trek we have, need more?

EDIT - ENT has cool episodes too.

I'm happy with the Trek we have and it it ceased tomorrow I would be fine with it.

I would love to have more as well.

    I'd like more.

Something following TNG/DS9/Voyager in the later 24th century. Particularly DS9. Picard scratches the surface.

There's a whole 24th century to explore with old and new characters. And the 25th.

I'm happy that there's going to be enough coverage of the 23rd, but would very much like to see Enterprise revisited a decade or two later and see the early days of The Federation.

And never thought I'd say it, but a fourth Kelvinverse film if there's anything to the mutterings about closing the (time)loop and finishing the whole thing off.

And I'd like a lot less animated stuff like Lower Decks. Preferably none.

Yes. DIS, PIC, SNW, LD, ST, & Prodigy is enough for now.

I have the Rise of the Federation novels & Glass Empires to hold me over for new ENT content.

I really feel like Short Trek can fill the gaps in Trek (ie. Ent-B, DS9 S8 concept, etc), even if that was not the original intention.

I want more. I enjoy the new series. I'm looking forward to Prodigy and Strange New Worlds. I'm curious what else may come our way.

Ah. A TNG fan. My theory, which keeps getting substantiated, is that people who prefer TNG to other Trek see it as the core example of what Star Trek should be, when in many ways it's an outlier. That's why DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise tried to create situations that would let them have that TOS kind of conflict and danger.

You haven't even watched the best 1990s Star Trek series yet, and you're happy to keep rewatching TNG. That's your choice, we don't all like the same things, even within Star Trek. But for me TNG comes somewhere below TOS and DS9, ahead of Voyager and Enterprise. It's too early to say where the newer shows will fit.

I'm not sure any of the new series are quite as good as DS9 yet, because they haven't been around long enough to really absorb them. But I find this era more exciting than the Voyager and Enterprise years, certainly.

Speaking as someone who's actually watched all of the Star Trek we have, sure, why not have more? TNG was a big change from TOS. The current shows are a big change from the TNG to Enterprise era. If, in ten years or so, Star Trek takes a break again, I hope I'm still around when someone brings it back another ten or fifteen years after that, to see what kinds of stories it tells and how it keeps itself current.

If Disco doesn't get much better, they can end it after S4. PIC should get at least the 3 seasons they were planning, and if it's good, it should continue. SNW could also get at least 3 seasons if it's good, but we'll have to see. Pike alone will already sell it halfway, they only have to come up with good stories. Prodigy really depends on what it's gonna be, but I could see at least 1 or 2 seasons of that as well. LD should also go on for say 2 more seasons or so, depending on if gets better or worse. But the one show they can drop completely for all I care is S31. Another Kelvin movie would be nice, but isn't necessary.

There is no loop to close.

No, but there could be - the time travel, Kirk Sr. thing and all.

And I just find the idea of finishing it and wrapping it all up in a nice neat bow appealing, even though I'm not exactly a fan of the movies.

I'm indifferent to Discovery. I don't watch the animateds. I had high hopes for Picard, but I won't spend another minute on it. I'm not happy with the direction they appear to be taking Georgiou, so I'm not really looking forward to Section 31.

So the only thing I'm excited about is Strange New Worlds...but I was excited about Picard, and that was a trainwreck. I'll try Strange New Worlds, but I'm perfect happy to let it all go away as well.

I'm always happy to see new content for things I like.

But my life will go on if it all stopped tomorrow.

Most confusing abbreviation for a Star Trek series ever.

At the very least, I've always been entertained by everything that's been put out so far. Some of it I think is genuinely brilliant.

If you asked me if I wanted more, I'd say heck yeah. Especially if it involves more Michelle Yeoh.

If you told me it was all ending tomorrow, I'd probably kick up a fuss about Picard ending early, but otherwise, I'd be fine.

I want the new Star Trek shows to keep on coming because there are certain very vocal people elsewhere on the interwebs who are pissed off by the mere fact that the new shows haven't been cancelled yet, and I'm amused by their pathetic, helpless rage. Plus, I like those new shows. I'll take any of the current generation over certain Berman era shows.

    What does that mean exactly?

When looking at it from the the perspective that TOS and TNG were the 2 first Trek series (and created by Roddenberry) it might be reasonable to think those series are what Trek is supposed to be? Or at least what Trek was supposed to be during 90s.

Maybe my original message wasn't clear enough. I have watched Trek series post TNG.
But yeah, I'm happy when I rewatch TNG =)

I have watched through TOS, TNG, DS9, VGR, ENT and enough of 'Discovery' to know it's not my thing, if memory serves 1st season and then about until they went into the distant future.

Those series being decades apart that's to be expected?

My true love is reserved for TOS and the TOS movies. I'd have loved to have gotten more from that crew, but what they gave us is pretty darn great.

That said, I am happy more Trek is being made, even if I don't love all of it. I am looking forward to SNW and more Lower Decks, particularly.

Same can be said for the newer series from TNG. And that's largely why I let go of what Trek "should" be. At some point in time there is going to be a transition as to what era these are made in. It doesn't make it less Trek, any more than TNG was lesser because it had a bald Frenchman surrendering in the first episode vs. Kirk who threatened to blow the ship up.

The thing is, TOS and TNG are very different. Superficially they're the same: Starfleet crews on a ship called the Enterprise, cruising through space and having adventures. But Roddenberry had changed during the intervening years, having become convinced that he was a really deep philosopher, so in TNG he decided that Federation society, and humanity in particular, had evolved beyond any of our problems of today. He didn't want imperfect humans. He didn't want conflict between his enlightened, perfect new characters. And that's the opposite of TOS, which in episodes like "Errand of Mercy," "A Taste of Armageddon," "Balance of Terror," and several others showed that 23rd century humans were much the same as 20th century humans, still capable of stumbling into unnecessary wars, still capable of expressing bigotry, but making an effort to move beyond that. In TNG, Picard just says, hey, we're perfect. The meaning of the Prime Directive changed, too. We're supposed to see Picard as a hero even when he says, well, shame that whole planet's going to die, but if we interfered, that would be bad for their culture. The key thing about TNG, which all the writers and producers have talked about, was that there could not be conflict between the main characters, because they're so evolved. Look back at TOS. Most of the sparring between McCoy and Spock was, at its core, friendly. But there are a couple of episodes where things get genuinely nasty between them when Kirk isn't there. There are conflicts involving other Enterprise crew, too -- Stiles mistrusts Spock once they learn what the Romulans look like; McGivers betrays her crewmates to help Khan.

Every Star Trek series since TNG has tried to find a way not to be like TNG, not to be hobbled by Gene's perfect humans and their lack of conflict. DS9 and Voyager took us outside the Federation and, to differing extents, introduced key groups of characters who were not part of that happy utopian Federation: Bajorans, Maquis, and others. Enterprise decided to get around it by setting its show closer to our time, before everyone became perfect. Likewise, Discovery went back to the TOS era, and Picard took its title character out of Starfleet. Lower Decks is a comedy. What Roddenberry thought Star Trek should be in 1966 and what he thought it should be in 1987 were not the same thing, and everyone else running Star Trek since has rejected the 1987 approach or tried to work around it.

    Sorry, I misunderstood.

TNG started 18 years after TOS ended. Discovery started 23 years after TNG ended, 12 years after Enterprise ended. But because 1987 is so long ago, and because so many fans started with TNG, a lot of fans think there's something wrong about new Star Trek being different from old Star Trek. They want Picard's brightly lit hotel in space with perfect people instead of what they see in the new shows, forgetting how different TNG seemed to those of us who were already adults in 1987 and had grown up with TOS and TAS.

Yep. What really gets me is certain Doctor Who fans who see 1963-1989 Doctor Who as very much one thing and 2005- Doctor Who as very much something else. Doctor Who completely reinvented itself several times in its first 26 years. The idea that, say, "The Sensorites" and "The Curse of Fenric" have substantially more in common than either one does with any Eccleston episode, for example, seems self-evidently silly to me. The show changed cast, producers, writers, and intended audiences repeatedly during its first 26 years. It never tried to be exactly the same thing for exactly the same audience decade after decade. Neither has Star Trek. Or anything else that started in the 1960s and is still going.

It's true that the time between TOS and TNG is long and from 'Enterprise' to 'Discovery' is along the same lines.

But might the difference be bigger when comparing 60s to 90s and 1995 to 2020? I don't know, sure feels like it but being kid of the early 80s maybe that has something to do with it?

I think being a kid of the early '80s is very much something to do with it. For fans who came in with the TNG era shows, Discovery and the others are their first big change in Star Trek (aside from the three last movies, which many of the anti-Discovery crowd hate as much as they hate Discovery). For those of us who are older, we've been through these changes before. Don't underestimate how some fans reacted to Star Trek - The Motion Picture, with its changes to the Klingons, never mind The Next Generation.

Exactly. Listening to the same declarations against Discovery is like revisiting DS9 or Abrams declarations. It simply is a different animal. Not good, not bad; just is. Personal enjoyment ultimately comes down to engagement, not conformity.
