Awesome work there, the details on the nacelles are really nice and make it even more '70's vision of the future. :mallory:
I also like the shape of the rear of the secundairy hull, reminds me a little of certain types of yachts.

Thanks! The more I work on this, the more I realize how much smooth skin ships are more ingrained into my design dna. I'm not much good at doing fiddly bits of surface detail and am envious of those that can can do it with such ease.

The rear of the secondary hull was a minor change I made some time ago. I think that angle helps convey a forward sense of movement, and I think the inevitable hangar bay will look much better at this angle as well.

I think you do fine with the details, both with this ship as with the early '50's era designs, you in any case don't overdo it. some more "modern" designs usually are made so that their shape and also size make "greebles" easier and even nescesary, your work leans more to a classic era of SF or in this case the '70's which had indeed more detailing but not as much as '90's and later designs. :mallory:
A shuttlebay, yeah I guess that is one of those things you need to include on ships Star Trek based ships. :D

Thanks! Sometimes I get self conscious about that, especially since I see my work before it's touched up in Photoshop. The images / ships really (and I mean really) benefit from the post work. It's why I often age my work or add film grain, as it adds some 'texture' to the smooth skin ships. I think the Dunsany was my attempt at a more detailed ship with 'greebles' galore, but it still comes out fairly smooth compared to...well just about everybody else's work. :)

I saw a really detailed pic of Moonbase Alpha today and I think that design aesthetic will work for the detail on the Dunsany better than say, the original Battlestar Galactica. What a difference three years can make! So that will be my guide on the bits and bobs added to the ship.

Quick update, some engine work and a revamped upper saucer. I think it works with the more blocky look of the ship.

I agree, the stepped saucer fits better and the whole ship is coming together really nice.
I also agree on Battlestar Galactica's aesthetics being too much, also that ship is really huge and they wanted to make it look like a military ship so lots of turrets, antenna and so on, for that ship it fits of course.

Its been ages that I've seen Space 1999, but I remember that it was more clean but functional looking, guess I'll Google it up.
But really nice work, it's a very unique design.:mallory:

I really like where this is going, despite the not entirely standard shape it just has "it" I could see it as a '70's Trek hero ship.:mallory:

Soran77 posted a thread with the "Far Beyond The Stars" DS9, and I thought I'd dig this up for laughs. It's from 1999, when I was first using 3d programs and Photoshop. I should be Donny levels of good at modeling, but alas, too many varied interests kept me from specializing in one thing. Jack of all trades and master of none and all.

Basically, "If DS9 was a 50's tv show"

Thanks, but i can't help but wince looking at it. Ironically, two decades later I'd be doing more 50's style Trek ships. Every once in a while I'd think about coming back to this, but the later Treks just don't speak to me the way the original does.

Worked on a couple of non-Trek vintage sci-fi covers. The universe here...the "retroverse"...is what I was working on when I came up with the Star Trek: 1955 ships. This idea has been percolating in my head for a few years so I thought I'd work on it to take my mind off things.

For this stuff, I'd worked out a basic timeline of a future conflict. So typically the images line up with the tales told by Paul Goddard. Sometimes, just the title by Goddard might indicate where the story went. For anyone who's seen my old Electroprise magazine covers, you've seen Goddard's name before.
    Anyway.....

Managed to tune this one up after a year or two into something I'm happy with.

Oddly, for the oldest time period works I've done, I did very little aging on the covers.

The Earth-Romulan War made it to the Sol System with a last stand at Saturn. The Romulan ship hits the Earth ship with its plasma-flame weapon. :p

Nice! But in this case it's more like a Venusian cruiser ambushing a Martian ship, with the Venusian's being an ally of Earth. :bolian: (The Martians become an ally of Earth later as well)

I didn't realize until much too late that I'd put a Martian ship near Saturn and a Saturnian ship near Mars on the covers.

Well it's been awhile since I posted any artwork, found this early WIP of the Doomsday Attack image. This was my original design for the Doomsday Machine, but my rickety old machine and dead 3D program were so lagged out by this model, that I removed the whole ring and sphere rig, and reworked the "mouth" area. This version would've fired Death Star style with the main beam coming out of the center, with smaller beams coming from the radar dish emitters on the spheres. Initially I didn't make the Death Star similarity, and didn't feel as bad losing the sphere's once I did.

This image was never meant to be posted, as there's a lot about it that bugs me, but I thought some might get a kick out of it.

Glad you did post it, it's really great with it being done in that style.:mallory:
