And the Ansata transporters from TNG's "The High Ground", IIRC

Except that that one was deadly.

Might be it only takes a bit of R&D to file the edges smooth, but a bunch of terrorists couldn't afford that. The very same principles might result in a perfectly nicely working device such as the Sikarian trajector or the Iconian gateway, if researched and implemented properly.

However, both Data and Wesley said that the "Elway Theorem" had been proven to be wrong, whatever that means, and so that means of transportation was definitely unsafe.

Yup. Might be whoever proved the theory wrong was also lacking in means, skill or interest, though, and the Iconians got this very thing right for their part - the good old "Vulcan Science Academy has conclusively determined that travel at faster than walking pace is impossible" shtick.

Did you notice that every other series depicts Vulcans as bad, starting with TNG?

    TNG: Vulcans are good

DS9: Vulcans are bad: A serial killer, One who's mocking Sisko (how dare he?)...

Voyager: Vulcans are good (well, except maybe that Pon Far incident with Vorik...)

Ent: Vulcans are definitely bad (Archer keeps headbutting with them during the whole series)

    Disco: Vulcans are good again...

Picard: The only Vulcans mentioned turned out to be Romulan moles...

Yeah Trek likes to do a lot of back and forth with the Vulcans. In Enterprise I can understand why they are treated with disdain because they were acting pompous and holding us back a bit. TNG I think did them well. Never got much into DS9 so can't comment and Voyager well we had Tuvok he was a good Vulcan.

And thanks Locutus I had forgotten about the Iconians. I wish we had learnt more about them in one of the shows but alas.

The iconians were very good at making very nasty computer viruses.

Yes but it would have been nice if one of the shows had done more with them

There are always the novels and Star Trek Online...

I was always under the impression the systems were just incompatible.

I don't know. It really worked like a computer virus, disrupting all the systems until the ship blows itself up.

Yeah that whole staying aware and being able to talk and even *move*, would seem to contradict the idea that in transport an object or person is reduced to data or energy or particles or molecules ("molecular transport") - ALL of which have been used as explanations, at one time or another, for what the transporter is supposed to convert a person or object into.

There may actually have been a sort-of explaination in one of the final episodes of "Lower Decks" for how a person stays awake and aware and, in some sense "whole"

There are plenty of questions where they keep contradicting themselves, transporters, beaming through the shields, curable diseases or wounds... Most of the time they can't even keep track of what they've said a few episodes before, let alone a season or two or in another series.

Take Riker for example at one point (Angle One I think) he says I'd rather face a court-martial (for violating the prime directive) than to let a dozen of people die and at another point (Pen Pals) he says, well, maybe it was their fate to die!!! (about millions of people!!!) I mean it's like it's not even the same person speaking.

Welcome to Star Trek where everything is made and the details are overthought for years to come.

Not just Riker but even Picard was willing to let them all die so they could fly off to do whatever the heck they were doing. The whole attitude of "let them die" kind of stinks.

But unlike Riker, that was pretty much consistent with the Jean-Luc "why did you save those frozen people?" "You were right to let that child die" Picard we'd seen up to that point.

Will we get a measure of a man, part 2 where Picard has to prove that he's sentient?:D

Picard: Am I sentient? I don't know. Do you? Do you???
