Yep...Never got why they set it in that period but changed so much stuff. Had discovery started say in the 25th century it could have been almost identical but avoid a lot of criticism.

Honestly, they went for it because of familiarity. Kirk and Spock and that era would hook in casual viewers as well as tap in to the prequel trend that had happened in the past decade. Plus with how much money Abram's films did there would be some inspiration there.

I agree that the 25th century would have made more sense. But, the BTS troubles are well documented at this point so I see no reason to belabor the point.

Because they wouldn't attract any new fans if they made it look like the show was made in the 60s.

I love TOS, but I wouldn't watch a show with that aesthetic in the 21st century, unless it was like a fan film/series.

well, they could have either set the series in another period or done what they’ve been doing with the enterprise in season 2 and will be doing on SNW, what’s the problem?

Because one of the stories Bryan Fuller wanted to tell needed to be in this time period. According to him the series was inspired by an event mentioned, but never seen in TOS. I don't think the Season 1 we got ever followed up on that though, since he left the series before filming even started.

Perhaps the story he had in mind originally, but the whole season 1 could be set after Voy with very minor alterations only. basically replace sarek, which, given how much they changed him, wouldn’t be a bad thing anyway, and it’s done.

We had never seen Sarek in this time period before, they didn't change anything since we didn't know what he was like before his appearance in TOS.

    I disagree.

seemed a totally different character to me, but ok.
what major thing wouldn’t have worked say in the 26th century?

And Spock was a totally different character in 'The Cage'. People can change over time.

Well, we don't know, Fuller never said what the event was.

And try addressed that in one of the short treks, which was nice. Still, my opinion on the portrayal on sarek is a very minor thing.
as I wrote, of the season as aired, not as what he had originally in mind but never came even close to being filmed.

They'd have to replace the Klingons with another species, maybe the Romulans, or someone new.

Maybe he was simply talking about how and why the hostilities between the Klingons and the Federation began.

You wouldn't even need to replace the Klingons as the antagonists of season 1 if it were set post-TNG/DS9/VOY, just their motivation. Maybe by this point in the future the Klingons have decided to join the Federation, but a segment of hardline ultra-traditionalists balk at this and stoke fears that the traditional Klingon identity will be further eroded. They instead seize control of the Empire, sparking a war between them on one side and the Federation on the other.

They could have made changes to the original sets and styles but kept it aethitucally the same. Basucally keep the sane color and styles but add actual computer graphics, give the walls a more metallic shiny sheen, keep the vuew screen square but add other functions. Irs not hard to update a look but keep it true to the original. They decided to change everything. Totally unnecessary.

This sounds like a better fit for Post-TUC. Say the same number of years later In-Universe as had passed in Real Life. So around 2317. The Empire has stagnated since the Khitomer Peace Conference. It's not what it used to be. A faction of the Klingons led by T'Kuvma wants to Make the Empire Great Again.

It makes the Trump-ism, that the writers wanted to go for, more of a natural fit. And I literally watched all of the TOS movies side-by-side next to DSC Season 1. And I see no problem with setting DSC a few decades after Star Trek VI, in 2317.

Post-TUC was my first choice for an era. But immediately Pre-TOS wasn't enough of an issue for me to complain. I liked the series enough that I wasn't going to make a huge fuss over it. And we're getting Strange New Worlds out of it. That wouldn't have happened without DSC being originally set when it was.

I'm glad DSC didn't take place Post-Nemesis because it meant Picard didn't have to worry about anything Discovery did. And I liked the feeling of "This is the first time we've seen the 24th Century in almost two decades!" and that feeling better fits going into Picard.

But it's all water under the bridge. I like DSC in the 32nd Century because, as I've said before, escalating stakes and experimental technology makes Discovery an odd series to be a prequel. So I'm glad they fixed this.

To be fair, when I said post-TNG/DS9/VOY I wasn't thinking late 24th century. I was thinking more like sometime in the 25th century (maybe the 2460s, since every other era started there besides ENT) to give plenty of space between it and any shows like Picard.

precisely. In fact they could have declared the Klingon messed up their dna again and nobody could have questioned the klingorks. Also, the motivation -what little of it there was- would have worked as well in a future where the Klingon had passed several decades in isolation.

Which is they started doing in season 2 and will do in SNW. A much better solution in my opinion.

    it does now!

    agreed.

same here. Anything from the mid 25th century onwards would have worked well.

Season 3+ is far enough in the future that it really doesn't.

    Hopefully.
or use the already rebooted thing that they were adamant they wouldn’t use for reasons.
