It would be nice to hear @Rigelkent thoughts on what was discussed, I agree. I think there are a lot of disparate opinions as well as a lack of a clear idea of what "Free Star Trek" would look like. My interpretation is simply "Let me make whatever I want and don't sue me" but I could be simplifying things too much.
And he probably wouldn't be sued, so long as he didn't try to make a payday off of the Star Trek brand.
It amuses me the presumption of ownership that fans have over their favorite properties. I understand it comes from a place of passion but it assumes much. And I think that fans expect all people to have the attitude that the IP owner (whomever it might be) would simply allow this.
