I wish Picard would go more than 3 seasons, but I think that is all up to Sir Patrick. As to section 31, I have to quote myself as I already said they don't need it until one of the current shows end:
Discovery (sorry Fandom Menace!) and Strange New Worlds will probably both have long runs. Lower Decks could theoretically run forever, because it's a cartoon and they don't have to worry about the actors aging. As long as it doesn't run as long as The Simpsons... So, yeah, that leaves Picard as the series most likely to end first. But if it runs passed three seasons, I don't think a Section 31 series will happen. We'll be so far removed from any of that by then, that now I don't see it happening. I'm not saying I definitely don't think it'll happen, but the tea leaves at this point, IMO, suggest it's probably not going to.
If Section 31 doesn't take off within the next year or so, I can almost guarantee they'll bring Michelle Yeoh back for at least one guest spot on either SNW or Discovery. Lost in all of this though, I don't think they've mentioned Short Treks at all. They were never essential viewing of course, but they were fun little diversions. I'll probably miss them if they really are gone.
Yep, it's pretty clear that Section 31 will probably go into production after Star Trek Picard S3 (assuming we get to that point and I only say that because by that time, Patrick Stewart will be 83-85 in the best of circumstances) wraps.
It seems very probable the Section 31 show isn't going to happen. The interest in the show was lukewarm at best.
We have no way of knowing this, but it always seemed to me like there was greater interest from the producers/writers than from the fans. Which, TBH, is a really bad sign for a successful show. There's a reason creator's pet is a trope.
No, but the case does look like it's settled. Unless they do some sort of special, or fold it into another series.
Producers: Guess what? We're gonna do a Section 31 show! Isn't that great!?! Fandom: Ugh, that's a horrible idea. Producers: But hey, we're not in a big hurry or anything...
Georgiou was well-received, and she was played by a great actor who was just on the cusp of a renewed international interest resulting from starring in a very successful film. From the POV of putting together a package, it was pretty natural. It wasn't a lack of interest from fans for Georgiou as it probably was that they've never cracked the nut of how to build the series and at the same time several other of their projects have garnered a great deal of interest. Who knew as STD limped to the end of its first season that bringing in Mount as Pike and adding on Spock was going to turn into such a big deal? Or that they'd get all the ducks in a row to launch a TNG-based show built around Patrick Stewart? Studios don't have infinite development and production resources, no matter how much it sometimes seems so. Somethin's gotta give.
The Section 31 series will premiere along side the Captain Worf and Sulu series.... (and the Boba Fett series, though that one seems to be actually happening).
Even before COVID, they were saying they were at least looking in to filming seasons two and three back to back, and I swear I read somewhere that Picard was anticipated to only run for those three seasons, at least at one point. That in mind, and in light of other precautions, I can definitely see why giving 31 the breathing room of a couple more years of development until they wrap Picard would make sense. Like, I can absolutely see ways that a 31 series can or could develop, and I definitely got the impression that Michelle Yeoh fully intends to return as Georgiou in some fashion, which, honestly, I feel like that’s at least half the motivation to keep the wheels turning on this, even if it’s not in active production. So if, functionally, the current slate of live action Trek is Discovery Season Four, SNW Season One, and what is in practice a double sized Picard Season Two, that’s definitely enough plates spinning to not put a fourth series (sixth if you count Lower Decks and Prodigy) into production - This gives them enough time not just to work out the kinks in advance, but also help establish a distinct tone for all the shows, make sure they get their own identity. Because that strikes me as the key thing for keeping the brand going. I wouldn’t write any epitaphs yet. Just because plans change, that doesn’t mean the end of this idea.
If they really want to do some S31 stuff, they should consider doing a mini-series. Probably a better idea than the Khan mini-series which probably will never get made either.
I totally agree. I've loved the idea of a S31 show from the beginning. Then again, I like Yeoh and Shazad Latif.
This is how I see it: Possibility Section 31 --> Could happen, depending on Picard. I think PIC will run more than three seasons, to be honest, but I could be wrong. S31 not happening is the prediction of mine I stand by the least. Possible But Not Likely Star Trek 4 with the cast from the Abrams Trilogy. We'll see them before I turn 100 because these ideas just won't die Starfleet Academy A series with the Enterprise, set after the 24th Century. --> We finally sort-of got a fall of the Federation series, so I don't think these other two ideas are out of the realm of possibility. Never Gonna Happen Captain Sulu Captain Worf Captain Riker --> Only because Jonathan Frakes is more of a director now. Tarantino Trek --> Unfortunately.
