I don't know what this means. I have a shooting script for "The Cage" - photocopied way back in the day - and it's titled "The Cage" on every page header. No one retyped the entire thing back in the 1960s to swap out the title for the sake of reselling it.

And of course it's referred to as "The Cage" on all of those production memos that have been circulating for fifty years.

The title was changed during production. You can see it go from being titled "The Cage" to "The Menagerie" on the daily production reports, and all subsequent correspondence about post-production, screenings, etc. refer to the first pilot as "The Menagerie." Most of the scripts I've seen where prepared before the name change.

Yep, and after they named the "envelope" episode "The Menagerie" they commonly reverted to "The Cage" to differentiate them.

Given the other thread about a TOS "reboot" (which will never happen, since they're continuing the TOS universe building with all the new series), I think the perfect way to build a series around the TOS Enterprise and tell new stories is to set it post-TMP / pre-WOK. Chronicle the missing 5 year mission(s) of the refit.

I like your thinking here. I missed the vote, but I would've voted in favor. I still think it made little sense for VOY (I recall) to put a definite, or close to definite, date for the end of the five-year mission and the V'Ger incident. I wish they had left that somewhat nebulous. I wish Kirk had done two five-year missions. Feels like after 10 years, as opposed to five, he would've been more amenable to becoming an admiral. Further, faulting TMP here, I wish that it had been stated that Decker had been the captain of the Enterprise longer than he was, which would've opened up the door for the franchise to make more money in telling that story in books and comics.

As it stands, there's over a decade of official untold stories from TMP to TWOK for them to use the Enterprise. Was Spock the captain all those years, after Decker and Admiral Kirk? Did the veteran crew stay on after TMP or go their separate ways again? There's still a lot of unexplored stuff there. Which means opportunities to create new characters. Illia was also short-changed, so it would be nice to see the Deltan culture get its due with another character perhaps. With today's special effects, they could have M'Ress and Arex in live-action, and back on the Enterprise. I also would like to see TOS-movie era Romulan warbirds or birds-of-prey.

As much as I like DISCO Pike, et. al, I do feel like they are going to be squeezing Strange New Worlds into the overall story in a time that is already ripe with stories and canon, and it'll have even less space than DISCO had. An Ethan Peck, as an older, seasoned Spock (or Rebecca Romjin's Number One), in command of the Enterprise from TMP to TWOK would give them a lot more space and basically no issues with canon.

To the OP's question of what I would like to see:
-I would like a reboot of this idea, though with Spock (Ethan Peck) or Number One (Rebecca Romjin) as captain. I would also like to see Decker, Illia, Xon, M'Ress, and Arex in the crew. It gets tricky when it comes to having a mix of veteran TOS actors and new actors, so I would not bring in people to play slightly older (than their TOS) versions of Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, Scotty, etc. I would at some of the better known supporting characters, which I think could be more easily recast, like Dr. M'Benga, Nurse Chapel, etc. and have them fill some of those roles.
-I wouldn't mind having the TOS vets still with us involved in some way, playing different characters or doing voicework. Admiral Kirk could hail Decker from time to time, something along that line.
-I would prefer episodic storytelling, though there would be arcs, involving the Romulans and Klingons (we might get to see the unraveling of the TOS-era Romulan/Klingon alliance) and also catching up with and fleshing out ENT and TOS species like the Andorians, Orions, Tellarites, Suliban, Xindi, TAS's Kzinti, and even TNG's Nausicaans.

There was a time when I would've been interested in a Phase II series... but Strange New Worlds will be filling that niche.

Phase II would just be something that popped up from out of nowhere, in a vacuum. Strange New Worlds spins off from Discovery Season 2. Even Picard had the 24th Century snippet from the 2009 Film to bounce off of. Phase II would just look random. Not the beginning of Kirk's story on the Enterprise or the end. This strange place in the middle. It sounds like an idea better suited for 1978 than 2021.

Discovery is pretty much Planet of the Titans now—just going forwards in time.
I like that. Each trek show needed to come after one another—less problems that way

I have been a proponent of a Post-TMP animated series since the '90s. I saw it as a way for the TOS cast to continue into their golden years (in an animated show, it wouldn't matter how old they were). Sadly, so many of them are gone now...

How is that anything like the so-called "Planet of the Titans"? I mean, aside from the fact there's some time travel involved?

That and the ship...and perhaps a part the crew has yet to play, perhaps?

And have them wear those terrible pajama uniforms from TMP?

Only ground crew should get those. 3rd season TNG uniforms for ships, DS9 uniforms for space stations, and ST II uniforms for the brass.

The uniforms were designed for TMP. They would've used the original uniform designs (with some updates) in Star Trek II. On the TMP-DE DVD, there is test footage using the uniforms.

    Two solutions:

    1. Have a suitably reimagined uniform that looks generally looks like the TMPJs, but is much cooler.

    2. Have the first episode open immediately post-TMP. Kirk returns to visit Admiral Nogura. Upon entering his office, Nogura breaks out laughing and says “OMG. You didn’t seriously wear that on a mission, did you?? Those were just jokes we distributed for ‘Crazy Uniform Day’ before it was interrupted by V’ger., Here, have your crew put these on.” [hands him a precursor to the Monster Maroons].

I know the TMP uniforms are unpopular but that feels borderline insulting.

I mean in my opinion the TOS "Wiggles" sweaters and go-go dresses are only marginally better than the TMP pyjamas, but the poster I quoted was talking about a "post TMP, PRE-WOK" show, which would presumably continue to use the pyjamas rather than revert to the sweaters/dresses.
Though a post-TMP show would also open up questions on how they'd cast that. Why would they purposefully make the whole set of principal characters middle aged?(since Ilia and Decker where killed off in TMP and I don't know how soon Saavik could enter the picture, I'm bad with the movie chronology, so I have really no idea)

To be fair, I think they could update the TMP uniforms for a modern audience without much trouble. It’s already been done, in a sense. Pike’s Admiral uniform from (the end of) ST’09 and STiD was a tasteful homage to those.

And at the end of the day, they’re essentially jumpsuits, which have been updated for the times from TMP in TNG, DSN,VOY, ENT, and now DIS.
