I understand those frustrations. For me, as long as the main plot is canonically accurate then I can forgive those aspects. But I think most everything since ENT has broken canon at some point.

I do love the new star trek though, especially since each show isn’t derivative of the same style. But hopefully strange new worlds scratches that classic star trek itch.

ah, yes, this was totally unnecessary and has been grating fans for many years. In defense of discovery, they use both systems at the same time, kinda of reconciling the issue.

Sadly for TOS any time a show tries to lean on it for inspiration they just go full on for the memberberries and give us some version of Spock or some cheap easter egg.
DIS was probably the best chance but they mostly decided to go a different way artistically

I guess you're leaving out the Abrams movies, which do also include rank braids on the uniform sleeves, gold for the command officers, and a navigator position on the bridge.

Actually, in regards to a lack of navigator, I suspect modern writers just don't understand the position and don't know how to write it as anything other than a co-pilot. Even though the Abrams movies do include a navigator, they typically don't have the navigator doing navigator things, with the possible exception of Chekov explaining the warp-bounce off Titan's atmosphere thing in Trek XI. Even then, aside from that, Trek XI utilized Chekov in other matters, he's for some reason do ship-wide PA announcements to explain the mission to the crew, or he's the one who has to run to the transporter room because only he knows how to lock on to a moving target and beam them aboard. In STID, they moved Chekov to engineering and the replacement navigator just had basic and generic dialogue like obligatory "Aye Sir" or whatever. Beyond has the Enterprise destroyed relatively early on and Chekov's scenes were involved with the ground action.

And I know it's generally frowned upon to mention this show in a Star Trek discussion, but The Orville did include a navigator in its main cast in the first season, but ran into the same problem of not knowing how to utilize the position as anything other than a co-pilot and as a result, the character was promoted to chief engineer by the end of the first season, and a replacement navigator was never introduced.

I do like it best of all the Kurtzman Treks, which at this point isn't saying much. So OK, I actually like it. I like that the most Berman Trek of all the Kurtzman Treks is an animated Trek. Animation can cross generations and styles better than live action.

But the humor in it feels WAY too "I am SO much more the ST fan than you" for my taste.

Yes, because those are movies deliberately following TOS closely. In fact part of the reason I love those films is because of that effort they put into it- it's more effort for a TOS sequel than any of the series, I feel.

But another thing I appreciate about them is that they aren't so slavish to TOS that they can't innovate. That's all I ask- build off of the standards set down in TOS, not TNG.

Disco has rank bars and TOS colour-coded uniforms on the Enterprise in season 2 (which will presumably continue on Strange New Worlds). Somehow the rank systems and different uniforms are concurrent:shrug:

Provided you are not in one of the Kelvinverse short-sleeve miniskirt uniforms, in which case your rank is apparently Female.

Ah chief engineer the easiest post to achieve in a starfleet ship. All you need to do is a brief stint at the helm

I just assumed that Starfleet decided to combine the two positions (navigator and helmsman). They may even use a different word for it, like "pilot".

One thing I find bothersome is just what is Tendi's role? Is she a medical or science officer or is she somehow both?

Also why bleep the swearing? I never understand doing that.

Other than that, really can't fault the show.

Honestly? Mariner. She's just a bit much.

Yeah, I'm only a couple of episodes in, but Mariner is rather grating.

    There's a lot of yelling.

But overall, I like the show.

Turns out Mariner becomes less grating as the season goes on, so I'll retract my previous post.
