True. And in the case of K:SI, it would require radically restructuring the movie two get them to the island and have them all meet up quicker. And that might screw up the pacing too much.

'Godzilla vs. Kong' Likely the Latest Tentpole to Go to a Streamer

Knowledgeable sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix has made an offer of more than $200 million for the film while WarnerMedia has blocked the deal while preparing an offer of its own for its streamer, HBO Max. Legendary declined to comment while a Warner Bros. spokesperson said: "We plan to release Godzilla vs. Kong theatrically next year as scheduled."

The Netflix offer undoubtedly had allure for Legendary, which financed 75 percent of the budget. As Netflix does not have a presence in China, the film could have played theatrically there.

I know that Netflix likes to waste money, but 200 million dollars for this film would have been a hilarious waste of money. probably not the worst waste Netflix has ever done, but still an awful lot of money for the rights to a single movie, especially this one.

    No! NO!

This is a film made for the big screen. Release it late 2021. It will make more than 200 million. It will make 3 times as much internationally. It's a once in a lifetime cinematic experience to see these two go against each other unless you saw the original on the big screen.

^Yeah, I find myself hoping HBO Max makes the cut. That way, there at least will be a theatrical release. Luckily, it's currently set for May 21, so there's a chance theaters in most places will be open again at that point.

Netflix acquiring it makes sense since they have those animated Godzilla movies and that upcoming anime series. I too would prefer it at the cinema but I wouldn’t be unhappy if Netflix got it.

HBO Max has the Showa Godzilla movies, though. I don't think Netflix has those. German Netflix certainly doesn't.

HBO Max does sound like a good service. Shame it isn’t available outside the Colonies.
I’ve good the Criterion collection of those though. I’ve got them all except a Japanese version of Godzilla vs King Kong and US version of Godzilla ‘85. The one where they change it so the Russians launch the nuke instead of trying to stop it.

If they go the same route as Wonder Woman 1984, it could get a simultaneous release in theaters and streaming. I wouldn't mind that as I could still go see it on the big screen. Even if it came out now I'd feel pretty comfortable going to see it as theaters here are never that busy unless it's a Marvel or Star Wars movie.

I'd further guess that an HBO Max deal would be a licencing deal, meaning the streaming rights would revert back to Warner/Legendary after a while, and also not affect DVD/BluRay releases. Maybe not even digital release on iTunes, Amazon and other VOD platforms.

It also has King of the Monsters, so it would be nice to see on HBOMax, just so we have those together.
According to IGN the HBOMax option is looking more likely, and they are considering going to go the same route they did with Wonder Woman 1984 and also release it in theaters.

Legendary Pictures wants $ 250 million for the HBO Max release.

Considering Netflix had previously put up an offer of $ 200 million, this does not seem unreasonable to me. Especially since HBO Max/Warner Media has kind of put themselves in a corner by announcing the HBO Max release before consulting Legendary.

Yeah, that doesn't seem that bad for something like this.
I'm surprised we haven't gotten a trailer for this yet, it was originally scheduled to come out last month, so I would think they'd at least have enough footage for a short trailer by now.

As far as I know, post-production has been complete for months now. I would assume that a trailer is ready, but they’re waiting until they can actually confirm a release date.

Well, I guess this means I'll be switching back from Netflix to HBO Max in March.
