I have to assume the reason they went with green rather yellow in the first place is that green red and blue are the primary colors (not pigments) as demonstrated by the pixels of a color TV.

I think so as well. But over time and as episodes were put through color correcting and timing, as well as copying the originals for syndication, those subtle shades turned the Command unis to yellow.

Like in TNG. The burgundy/red uniforms actually had a slight purplish tinge to them in person. Lighting and filming brought more red out.

Yeah, Theiss said he brought in a color consultant - the woman who developed the system popularized in a beauty book of the time called Color Me Beautiful - to advise on selecting the shades of the three colors to be used on TNG. He'd been winging it a bit during TOS, as was everyone designing on the show. There was a question of what bright colors would read well on both color and black-and-white sets.

The TNG movie/later DS9 uniforms, the grey shoulders looked purple'ish on screen because of the lighting for some reason.

Here are two frames from the same shot - same camera setup, same lighting - in the episode "Balance of Terror." You can get a good sense of the difference that the restoration and color correction process made in the apparent colors of the uniforms:

I think the 32nd Century Starfleet is a descendent of the 24th Century Starfleet Barber Corps.

I have a distinct memory of seeing various on set interviews and general behind the scenes footage from TNG, DS9, & VOY where the science uniforms looked WAY more green than they did on the actual shows. Either it's a difference between the filmstock vs. the video tape of the BTS equipment, or the lighting setup for the actual shots drastically affects the colour timing during the editing and mastering process.
So I can see there being a similar problem when the uniforms intended for cinema grade filmstock and camera starts being used on the TV shows' equipment.

Either way it's worth remembering that even going back to the B&W days, they'd intentionally make costumes the "wrong" colour specifically because of the way it would register on film vs. in person (seriously, look up what the George Reeves Superman costume actually looks like.) So the TOS command uniforms looking more green than gold/mustard doesn't mean they were supposed to be green on the show.

The Voy science uniforms turn from blue to greenish around season 4 - same goes on on DS9 at the same time - because they changed lighting methods.

I used to think medical was Teal and Science as blue, but I don’t know where I got that idea from. Jadzia wore teal, so yeah, doesn’t make sense.

The uniform Troi is ordered to wear in "Chain of Command" is very blue.

Lighting and surrounding colors might make a difference. I'm watching some TNG right now and there are scenes with Data, Worf and Geordi where their uniforms look to be slightly different colors.

To be clear, was it just a lighting change or did the fabric shade change also (do we even know)? I am fascinated by this issue for some reason :)

I *think* it was only an lighting change, but I’m not sure.

That would make sense, but then we know Enterprise changed jumpsuit colour at one point.

They went from a slightly purpleish denim style fabric to a smooth blue one
