I hope Starfleet is still pursuing alternative propulsion systems. Even the new gold mine of dilithium will exhaust one day.

I think she died too fast. It's amazing how she was able to fool that guy she helped, into thinking she was even a normal person (for all his life!), given how quick she was to turn on people and torturing them, but it's obvious that her character was completely unredeemable.

I would not say that they are inherently boring characters. Trek has not really tried to make them interesting. They don't have to be boring with good writing. The fact is that we've gotten good "Federation politics" episodes in Trek. DS9's "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost" is a good example that is considered one of the best. TNG's "Unification" and "The Defector" are also good examples of episodes that deal with Federation geopolitics. The novels have managed to make Federation President's interesting. I am thinking of Pres. Bacco for example from "Articles of the Federation". So it is doable to have Trek that deals with geopolitics and features the Federation President in an interesting way. It's just all comes down to the writing and the characterization.

It just occurred to me that Kovich's character could have been played by Scott Bakula or literally any past Trek actor and that character's appearance handwaved as a leftover from the chaos of the Temporal Wars.

Burnham: President Archer? How are you here? How are you still alive?
Archer: I got here in the chaos of the Temporal Wars, been here ever since due to the time travel ban.

They could bring in Shatner that way as Kirk with the same explanation, with the added bonus that the Discovery crew wouldn't know who he is! :guffaw: But I don't think Shatner would waste his time on a gimmick cameo.

Well the planet itself is literally Dilithium, so it will probably last another 900 years.

They still need the actors to voice their characters.

There was a real Power Rangers vibe to the Chain at times, between the costumes, the vocal effect and the way the goons stood with their feet a mile apart. (Osyraa's plasticky prosthetics didn't help.)

I have one question: Where did Burnham beam the invading force after she took over the ship's functions?

Outer space? A la mirror universe?

She says to the computer to beam off all the regulators but that science guy was still on the ship. How did the computer know that he turned good and could stay onboard

He wasn't officially a regulator. It seems Discovery's computer takes a literal "exact words" approach to orders.

    Cool. Don't care.

Lower Decks is where gimmicks and cameos belong.

I think the Regulators had a very specific kind of badge that helped identify them. Science Guy must not have had one.
PS- So, who WERE the Regulators anyway? Borg? Breen? New guys?

Regulators were the hired goons of the Emerald Chain.

It seemed pretty clear to me she beamed the Regulators back onto Osyraa's ship. Which of course means she later blew them up, but she didn't know that at the time.
