Spoilers Star Trek: Discovery 3x08 - "The Sanctuary"

Agreed. While Georgiou's visions seem to increase along with the scenes examining her in sick bay, we're not learning anything new about this subplot. It's interesting to me that the scene that was chosen as a sneak peak for next week was such a revealing one focused fully on this.

 

That short preview clip was more interesting than the whole episode

 

Surely somewhere in the galaxy there are winged primates willing to do her bidding?

 

I assume any ship is attractive to pirates. Dilithium in any quantity is valuable. A ship the size of Discovery is a prize.

 

How can you call this episode filler? It was another step in the progression of Michael and Book's love where Book decided he wanted to join Starfleet which is a huge step for his character. It established the origin point of the Burn and that there was a distress signal coming from the nebula.

It was a linking episode, preparing multiple storylines for the next real step.

 

Look how three random Ferengi pirates almost fed on one another over a mid-22nd century Earth starship that didn't even have shields or tractor beams. Smaller, more primitive and less powerful but still worth almost getting killed over.

 

I think that may have been the Sea Locusts.

 

So, people say it sucks when DSC is too serialized, and it sucks when it’s too episodic.

That's exactly what it is. I can take quotes from the same posters, if I wanted to, and pit them against each other.

 

No doubt you could....but you likely have more entertaining ways to spend your time, my friend!

 

I like the shift to episodic, but several of the episodic stories have been dull and familiar. I could just as easily point out all the posts here claiming that episodic Trek was dull and played out. Truth is, both formats live or die by the quality of the writing, and Discovery’s, IMO, remains uneven.

 

I get tired of hearing about “The Writing” in Star Trek to be quite honest.

A lot of people like the show. A lot don’t. Why can’t we just drop all the bullshit and admit that it’s not to our taste rather than trying to rationalize and make it everyone else’s fault.

I’m not big fan of VOY. I don’t bitch about “The Writing” or anything else that wasn’t in my control. It’s just not my thing because it doesn’t appeal to me personally as much as the other series. That’s my problem. And I’m perfectly ok with that. The writers didn’t screw up. I just don’t care much about it.

I find this season to be far less interesting that the previous two. I don’t bitch about “The Writing.” I simply admit that it’s not holding my interest as much....bummer for me.

It’s a matter of taste. I can’t figure out how or why people won’t just own it.

 

We live in the age of dissection. Stating it's not for us is not the way; it must be unpacked in painful detail, while clinging on for unknown reasons.

 

I don’t get this at all, TBH. I enjoy discussing what works and what doesn’t. I’m not sure why you’d spend time on a discussion board if you don’t.

I'd rather here what works for people more than what doesn't. I mean, I love different points of view, but if a person isn't enjoying themselves then moving on seems wise to my mind. And I mean this in broad strokes about a wide variety of things. Unless I am to interpret sticking around as meaning there is some measure of enjoyment despite mostly criticism being posted.

I do it all the time...but listening to people moan away about “The Writing” has just gotten to be such an overwhelmingly tiresome cliché. It’s like somehow the story has objectively failed because of the lack of skill the storyteller possesses ...rather than just frigging admitting “hey, this doesn’t work for me because of my own preferences”

There’s a difference. One is a victim mentality (“someone else made it bad, so I can’t like it”) and the other is a far more self-aware admission that it simply doesn’t resonate (“I’m not a fan of <action oriented / time travel / melodramatic / technobabble / reset button / speechification / insert whatever else doesn’t appeal to you here> stuff, and so this didn’t appeal to me. “)

 

Some of the things you list can both be true. The Berman era series used technobabble and reset buttons so many times that they did become crutches for the show, which became lazy writing after a while.

Dismissing folks rightful criticisms of the sometimes slapdash writing on Discovery is kinda disingenuous. And there's plenty of us that can be critical of the show but still like and watch it - I always stay up on Wednesday nights to watch DSC the moment CBSAA makes it available to stream. To be honest, most of the discussion I'm seeing about it now are folks bitching about others being critical of the show and turning threads into an echo chamber.
