ignore real screencaps all you want - that doesn't change the facts. you can of course personally see pre-vfx production photos as more truthful as the final canon on-screen look, just as you can choose to ignore strong color differences in the rest of the intro and use only one part of it as an argument, just as you can ignore what production people say. but that doesn't change that the episode you wrote i should watch simply does not support what you wrote. just follow your own suggestion and watch the episode, or even just that scene, and pay attention to the crystal color. it really is very obviously green.

Linus' trouble with the new badge kinda addressed that really well with minimum effort or time

 

When Burnham action figures start to sell as well as Kirk and spock figures let me know. Until then this show is at the bottom .

 

What an absolutely ludicrous and arbitrary goal post.

 

Frankly TOS Era-based merchandise is the most successful in Trek history. If we base a series' legacy on how well its action figures sell then frankly none of them would have the legacy of TOS.

So yeah, that's not how DSC will be remembered.

 

Really? What are you doing? If this is the best you've got, then please let someone else bash the show.

 

Burnham will never be some a household sci fi name like Kirk. It won’t happen. The show is just just not that popular.

 

Sisko's not a household name, either. Nor Janeway. Nor Archer.

By that standard only Kirk and Picard qualify as "popular" and having a "legacy."

 

I'm having flashbacks. To talking about DS9 on this very board. In 1999 and 2000. Unlike you, I don't equate popularity with quality. Otherwise, Baywatch and Two-and-a-Half Men are the best shows ever. I don't give a shit about what other people watch. I only give a shit about what I watch. And, once again unlike you, I only watch what I like.

I'm done talking about this with you. I was done talking about this in general 20 years ago.

 

I find the Fandom Menace's attention to toys and memorandum to be a strange obsession. It's almost as if they want people to see the wall of stuff behind them as proof of their fandom.

However, did they really "earn" their fandom? I often find that they, and the acolytes they send out to spread their hatred of Discovery, really don't know their episodes very well. I don't think it is too bold to say that I know more about DS9, both episodes and production information, than most on this forum. All of my better posts have been using that knowledge of ds9 to undermine their arguments.

So, could it be turned around? Can we ask if they have earned their status as fans and critiques of what happens in Trek?

Arguing about the "correct" colour of dilithium crystals and the popularity of Star Trek action figures...

This is what fandom was destined for.

 

I stopped buying toys and playing with toys when I was 11. But when it comes to the Fandom Menace, hey, I'm not here to judge.

 

Sorry if it seems that I am dismissing those who do like memorabilia--I just put in an order with Eaglemoss for my son, and I love Star Trek tabletop games--but I suspect their equation of toys with quality is some sort of tell.

 

Kirk is not a household name at least not the one played by Shatner who is no doubt the kirk you are referring to. A majority of the general public will know the Kirk played by Chris Pine, because Chris Pine is hot and graces the covers of magazines. Shatner is now a washed up has been that can only get attention by being an idiot on twitter.

Also Kate Mulgrew gained far more public attention with her role in Orange is the new black and as an accomplished stage actress than she ever did playing Janeway.

 

you said that in a couple of decades the people that doesn’t like discovery now will like it while hating the new series, but on this very forum we have people not liking enterprise or Voyager back then and still not liking it now.

Sure, tastes changes, but probably not this much in this many people.

yeah, that definitely never happens. And she definitely never cries after killing people doing her job after she has stolen her dilithium, that was somehow totally fine.

well, the original argument uptrend was that discovery was more popular than TOS...

They do. As much as I love DS9 the vast majority of people don’t remember anything about it.

I was thinking of something just a tiny bit more meaningful than that (!) but, yes, the amazing beaming Linus is probably about as much reference as we're going to get on that front.

Being the best part of a millennium out of time and place should be truly disorientating for the entire crew and really should have been worth exploring, even in a short season, but pretty much the most we're going to get is everyone being tetchy in People of Earth and then Saru's comments to Vance / Linus being tap-happy in Scavengers.

I do think it was a missed opportunity to do a proper, thoughtful Trek episode on the issues faced by the Disco crew.

 

If the best the haters can come up with is “she cries too much” then it’s pretty pathetic. Shouldn’t they be taking up something new (and more hateful?) to hate? Ironically most of them seem to adore DS9 (although they most likely hated that back in the day too). They seem to forget that in the first season alone Kira cried in just about every Kira-centric episode; I definitely remember big tears in “Battle Lines”, “Progress” and “Duet”. Of course back in the day she got a similar amount of hate that Burnham gets (except it’s worse for Burnham because she’s the lead and black to boot; maybe the sexism and racism is unconscious in some people but I’d still argue it’s there). Maybe some people are just uncomfortable with emotion in general, but to me it seems appropriate that Burnham struggles with her emotion for two counts: firstly, as Kira did, she suffers from a degree of PTSD, and secondly, she was raised to repress her emotions. Anyone who has ever tried to repress emotion for any length of time will know that this doesn’t work and there will come a time you have to deal with those buried emotions times fifty. I still think Burnham is an excellent, complex and beautifully performed character.

 

I think it's the one where Archer et al. are turned into aliens, but these aliens happen to be boorish pricks, so it could easily be mistaken for a de-evolving episode.

 

They just might... the Burn wave spreading (nearly) instantaneously through the Universe sounds like Warp 10, which is supposed to be infinite speed. If we grab something like the soliton wave from TNG: New Ground and accelerate it to Warp 10, it might be a suitably treknobabbly explanation why every dilithium crystal got overcharged at the same time.
