Eh I'd argue Season 1 Picard is his whole own beast/Picard. Season 2-Best of Both World Picard isn't quite as contemptuous of everybody and everything around him as the guy in Season 1 was

I'll be honest, now I completely and totally understand why Season 1 Picard thinks 21st Century Humanity is so primitive.

    Because we are.
The humans of Star Trek are far more socially progressive with each other compared to humans in 2020. I doubt forced marriages, FGM, dictatorial nation states, religious extremism, kleptocracies, rampant free market capitalism, poverty, high crime rates, mass unemployment, large gaps between rich and the not so rich, sex, gender, race, class discrimination and people voting for lying , semi fascist, politicians are a part of Earth society.

But it's evolved less than it likes to think. Look at "The Drumhead", for example.

The Admiral did not represent the cultural views of the nation state of Earth, if she did she would have gotten away with her witchhunt.

Ah, but according to Picard, Simon Tarses's Starfleet career was destroyed because he was 1/4 Romulan. Which suggests that Satie had a lot of people who think as she does.

No his career was destroyed because he lied on his application about his background.
Although not canon, the novels corrected that nonsense, he went on to be CMO of a starship

Yeah, all Tarses did was lie on his application. Satie's witch hunt did not prove effective and even the head of Starfleet Security walked out.

I mean it's an interesting question... How would people here react if they were suddenly confronted with a trio of people from the late 1400s? Say feudal people from Europe?
Now the Middle Ages/Renaissance were in many ways less horrible than many people think today, but still you'd might be confronted with some views and mannerisms that you find downright repulsive and they'd likely be lost like children in this modern world. Horrible, horrible children. Chances are we'd be annoyed/disgusted with a lot of the things they do.

Of course Season 1 Picard didn't just show contempt to those three 80s stereotypes in The Neutral Zone. He frequently seemed like he could hardly stand to breath the same air as his fellow "evolved humans".
That's what I mean when I say Season 1 Picard was his own beast.

Starfleet command might have no faith in Picard in FC. But in the heat of battle when Picard announced that he was taking command of the fleet, his fellow captains immediately accepted his leadership. That says a lot about Picard.
Compare that to Kirk, who showed respect to a reproduction of President Lincoln and seemed to enjoy showing a 1960's fighter pilot around his ship.

Lincoln isn't from the 21st Century. Neither was Captain Christopher. ;)

Of course Picard was able to take command but that doesn't mean his faith in his superiors would be maintained.

Another novel had him get drummed out completely. Neither is canonical, though I like your version better. Maybe he was returned to Earth pending an investigation, and took the opportunity to study at the academy, allowing him to return to space as an ensign rather than a crewman.

One of my favorite Trek moments. I even included it in the "favorite Trek one liners" topic. Even though it was actually a zero-liner.

I guess the closest thing I have to a controversial Star Trek opinion is that, while often very left-leaning, Trek's reputation as trailblazing progressive programing is sometimes overstated.

People often remember the Kirk/Uhura kiss but rarely Kirk and Miramanee being stoned...

As someone who leans very much to the right, I can say that Trek is often appreciated by us as well.

It's okay to lean to the right, as far as you want, but I don't recommend walking over there. Like the far left, the lights flicker, the floor is sticky, and there's something lurking in the shadows.

I’ve been watching the BBCA Next Gen block while working from home and they recently rolled over from S7 back to S1. It’s a little jarring seeing him be such a jerk to everyone. I mean, Wesley deserved it. But everyone else. Geeze.
