My hope that he actually learns something from this is very distinct from what I think will actually happen.

Since Trump has contracted Covid-19 doesn't that mean Pence*, Biden**, and Harris*** have to be put in quarantine?

    * direct contact with Trump
** close proximity to Trump at the debate
*** direct contact with Biden who was near an infected Trump during the debate

It's designed to prevent foreign influence on the US president and VP, but I think Trump has demonstrated that where you were born has nothing to do with that. All it takes is greed, outstanding debts, blackmail, corruption, treasonous behavior or all of the above that can be manipulated by a foreign power.

Besides, in my experience recent immigrants are more patriotically motivated than long established citizens because they don't take their rights for granted, knowing they can be easily taken away, and don't conflate mere inconveniences like having to wear a mask with those rights being lost.

If there's a concern about a foreign "sleeper" coming over and rising to power, as far-fetched as that is, than put a requirement of needing to be a US citizen for at least 20 years or something; long enough to discourage anything but the most dedicated plant and long enough for governments to change hands and priorities to change.

But it's wrong to prevent immigrants from having a chance to run for president. They have as much of a stake in this country's future as anyone.

It isn’t just about him, it’s also about all the people he’s interacted with, all the people he’s told it isn’t serious. He may well survive but there are a lot of people who didn’t thanks to his recklessness.

In the beginning experts were telling people not to run out and buy masks in order to avoid buying up all the masks healthcare workers needed apparently, then they did a complete 180 on it. At some point a person needs to learn to think for themselves.

And? When the supply wasn’t there, it was smart to reserve resources for those on the frontlines of the pandemic.

But they told everyone else that non medical people didn't need masks at all, not that we were prioritizing. that's what made the shift to mask wearing so difficult. They should have told everyone to wear bandanas until they could get a homemade cloth mask and/or commercial mask production caught up.

It is a NOVEL coronavirus, it was all new. Recommendations changed when there was more study and better information. That's the way responsible adults make decisions.

I agree it was a worthwhile decision, to lie to the toilet paper hoarding public in order to keep them for those that need them on the front lines. But if Trump is literally responsible for deaths by bullshitting about turning the corner to keep morale up, aren't they too? I think these people are just doing the best they can given the circumstances

The CDC and experts weren't lying about the changing need for masks; they were learning and adapting. Trump was lying when he downplayed the extent and severity of the virus, though.

When the virus first hit they thought it would be similar to other coronaviruses like SARS and MERS where people present with symptoms and spread the virus just through coughs and sneezes and so forth. At the same time, there was a massive rush by the public on buying up stocks of N-95 masks and other high-grade PPE that were needed for medical workers and patients on the front line. Since they thought you wouldn't need a mask until you presented with symptoms, they recommended that the public didn't need to wear the masks unless they were symptomatic or caring for someone who was. There were other reasons they were hesitant to recommend them as well, like the fact that people don't use masks correctly which the CDC thought would result in people being lax on hand-washing and other effective measures if they thought just wearing a mask alone protected them.

But as they learned with further study, Covid-19 could be spread by people who were totally asymptomatic or presymptomatic carriers through airborne respiratory droplets just by breathing or talking. So anyone could be a potential carrier now, not just people with obvious symptoms who could be quarantined right away. Additionally, you didn't need a high grade medical mask like an N-95 that keeps viruses out, you just needed a more conventional mask to keep your respiratory droplets in when you talked or breathed, so recommending mask wearing wouldn't be taking the PPE from the first responders and medical workers.

Countries like Japan where a culture of lots of people wearing masks day to day already exists to prevent transmission of illnesses were hit less hard than Europe and the US.

I'm oversimplifying, but that's the general idea. It wasn't a deception (and it wasn't just our CDC, the World Health Organization held off on the mask recommendation even longer), they thought they were doing the right thing with the information they had at the time and with prior precedent with other coronaviruses. They learn and adapt with new information, which is what you're supposed to do, and something Trump is pathologically incapable of.

The VP debate I would call an outright tie. Both candidates were pretty evasive, opportunistic, self-righteous

Kamala won the debate. Pence looked ill prepared, like he had a few talking points. he padded out his answers with vague platitudes then always ran over and the moderator did nothing.

On one point, I think the Biden campaign should be up front and say they won't take stacking off the table unless the nomination of Barret withdrawn. Everyone knows what's going on.

On the other matter, Trump and Pence have both now refused to answer if their administration will leave peacefully if they lose the election. Essentially there is no appropriate answer to that. the matter might well go to the military at that point, and everyone knows it. The Biden administration is being asked to answer a question no one has ever had to ask before, necessarily because Trump very well might cause a constitutional crisis (and violate the constitution he swore to uphold).

Trump could, if he loses and he if he really wants to shit all over the country, and he might, refuse to accept the results but after Jan 6, congress counts the electoral college votes. Congress then certifies it. Once that's done, whether he moves his butt out of the white house or has to be dragged out with an eviction notice, Trump isn't the president.

Pence, on the other hand, might have more issues..

He was on the ropes the entire time. Harris made point after point and sounded genuine. Pence was on defense and sounded rehearsed.
