COVID’s not good for a lot of businesses. Particularly show business. Tenet, which Christopher Nolan HAD to have in theaters has only made about $250 million worldwide. For a movie like that, that should have been the first week. In the United States alone. I just find it strange that Viacom would continue to want to release these niche things (yes, Trek is niche) for maybe about 1000 people who would be interested and willing to go out to a theater. It’s not worth it financially. Even if they do own the theaters. I could see pre-COVID this happening. Absolutely. But it’s a silly idea in this climate.
It's only happening because of COVID. This Discovery S3 theaters stuff wouldn't happen if COVID didn't happen.
People aren't going to the movie theaters. According to Box Office Mojo, domestically, the total box office figures for last weekend was $11.3 million. Movies are literally losing money this year. Let's add to this that Discovery season 3 premieres three weeks from today. Don't you think there would be an official announcement at this point? They're not going to put these out later than the episode airs on CBSAA. What would be the point? Unless they're amazing, no one would come out to see it. Plus, what's the cost going to be? $10? Are they going to be releasing just the first episode or multiple? Let's assume for a second, that this is happening, that the release will be officially announced today and that it will be six releases of two episodes at a time with one being three (since there's thirteen total episodes). Each release will be $15. Seems reasonable, right? CBSAA without ads is what? $10? You're suggesting that Star Trek fans are going to go out and watch Discovery in a movie theater. With a lot of other people. When they have to wear masks. And they're going to do this multiple times. Ultimately paying $90. When watching it from home would cost them about $30. Even if I had a Showcase Cinema in my area, I know I wouldn't go. Plus your article is from May, a time where we thought that COVID might be able to be swept up by the end of the summer. I can buy that perhaps back in the spring/early summer this was a thought. But examples have shown that even when you have a limited release in theaters, the studio is making more money on the home release. I am totally willing to admit I'm wrong if that ends up being the case. It just doesn't pass the sniff test for me with the information that I have on hand. Sorry.
Again, this isn't personal. Stop taking it such. These are fair questions. There is no need to get defensive.
I don't understand what you mean with personal. You reply to me about my info but when I reply back I'm taking it personally? I'm not angry or anything, I just don't understand.
It came off that way. I apologize if I mistook your intent with your last post. Ultimately, we'll see what happens with this rumor.
I apologise if I came over wrong. I generally don't talk on forums and I'm having a hard time portraying emotion through text lol
Indeed. In the nineteen years I've been posting on this forum, I've only known two confirmed studio insiders. One back when Enterprise was in production, the other last year with Disco season 2 info. And they had to put up with a lot of doubters before they're information was was confirmed by coming true.
Guys I'm going to say this for the last time but I do NOT expect anyone to believe me blindly. Can we stop saying that because I myself never said that and I'm genuinely getting tired of having to reply to it every time I post something here.
Wait who was that? Also we had someone who knew the Enterprise was going to show up in the Season 1 finale. They weren't an insider themselves, but they knew someone on the inside.
Indeed, who pretty much proved themself by posting that we would see Pike's injury happen something like a month before the episode aired.
My whole approach was "I don't know but we'll find out in a few weeks anyway." Same thing here. I remember the one poster who kept insisting Strange New Worlds would be called Star Trek: Enterprise. And I kept thinking, "No, that's dumb. They won't have two shows with the same exact name in the CBSAA Library."
He had a similar belief that everyone should give him at least some trust. Didn’t help that nearly every bit of “inside info” he presented ended up being sorely incorrect. That he and the new rumor dude seem to have similar sources does not give me a lot of hope. But like with the other guy, I’m willing to admit my skepticism is misplaced. If that ends up happening.
That guy had pretty much no credibility with me at all given he first popped up on my radar posting in the Trek Lit forum about how the Trek novels were going to go to another company who were going to coordinate with CBS on making them canon, which immediately got shot down by the actual novel authors who post in the Trek Lit forum.
