Nothing so far has made me want to spend $500+ on a new console.

It is something i have been thinking about lately about why we always rush to buy the latest version of a product even if the old one is working perfectly fine.

The only advantage with consoles is that games tend to look prettier and more realistic but how much does that really impact gameplay? If the gameplay is intense and gripping i'm certainly not noticing the effect of technology xyz that is possible with the new consoles - maybe once in a while i'll stop to admire a really well done area but then it's back to the game (Assassins Creed synchronizing moments are perfect for this when you climb to the top of something and the camera does a 360 around you showing the landscape).

The same applies to PC's - my rig is now going on 5 years i think and still plays the games i play decently enough - mosly strategy games with the occasional more demanding games like Assassins Creed. Sure a more modern PC would load faster and give me shinier graphics (for which i would need to buy a new monitor as well to actually enjoy it) but to do so i would have to spend 2000+ Euro to get to the current level and i just can't justify it.

It comes down to a couple of things for me, one being space, the other being that we’re getting to a point where the gains from generation to generation is getting smaller and smaller. The only real differences when the games were in motion that I could pick out were differences in lighting.

I’ve been around video games a long time, back when we were trying to replicate the PAC-Man experience at home.

    I feel much the same, but in my time I've purchased Xbox, PS1, 360, PS3, Xbox 1, PS4 and now a PS5.

The last one I played before losing interest was the PS1. The rest were for Jr...

I’m sure I’ll end up with a new one at some point, we’re a house full of gamers. Heck, I have an Atari 2600. But I think I’m going to wait a bit before committing to this generation.

Though the first one to have a serious Star Trek game would probably get my business.

I was sold on the PS5 the moment they said there was going to be a new Ratchet & Clank game, and a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn. I know the Horizon sequel is coming to PS4 also, but whenever possible I try to play a game like that on the more advanced system, since that's usually the one that it's really supposed to be played on.

Well after seeing that the game prices here in the UK for these new consoles would be topping £70/80 a game at launch, and that is before they want to sell your season passes, extra DLC and patch in MT, i am now going to wait and see what happens with these.

Sony set the RRP for PS4 games in Europe to €70 but most shops sold most games at €60, they might have to go to €70 this generation though...
Good thing most games get bigger\longer, i dont have to buy so many games...

Never buy Rev A hardware. With the PS4, there were cooling issues that led to the red line of death as well as the console sounding like a jet turbine, and also short-circuiting HDMI ports and non-functional Wi-Fi (and the OS barely worked). Xbox One had faulty disc drives and crashes to the home screen when launching games. It took Microsoft three fucking years to fix the Red Ring of Death on the 360. Launch PS3s had severe overheating problems. The launch Xbox used DVD drives from Thomson that were prone to failure within about two years because they used a shitty lens. The list goes on.

Never, ever buy launch-era console hardware, and that goes doubly so when we're in the middle of a global pandemic that has turbofucked manufacturing lines six ways from Sunday.

I got lucky with mine, bought it a couple of weeks after launch and it is still going. Though it doesn't take/eject discs with the vigor it once did.

This is a super good reason to wait and see how things go this time around.

I've owned every iteration of the playstation so I'll be getting a PS5 no question, but there's no way I'm getting one at launch, for several reasons,

1: Price - this will come down a little in a years time.

2: The aforementioned potential technical issues.

3: I'm still rocking a 13.5 year old 720p Phillips 42" LCD TV that appears to want to live forever, so I don't want to run a PS5 off that as I'll be getting into 4k blu rays when I get one.

4: There's no title out for it yet that make it a must purchase - GTA6 would remedy this but that's still years off, Gran Turismo 7 will test my resolve also.

5: I think the PS4 still has a lot going for it, and I use mine as my main media centre as my aforementioned TV isn't a smart one, gaming is only one part of what I use mine for, I use it for Netflix, Amazon, Disney plus, Youtube, my VR headset (for movies as well as games), hell, my 'Fatboy' 80GB PS3 (how small does that hard drive seem now?) is still in daily use in my bedroom on similar duties, so I don't feel compelled to buy at launch at the moment, despite me getting the 3 and 4 within the first few months of their respective launches.

Yeah, i wont be getting a PS5 on launch either...
Maybe sometime next year, let other people beta test the system...
There is also the fact the ne Spider-Man and Horizon games will be out on PS4 as well(no surprise there) and the pre-order cluster-fuck...

So Microsoft brought ZeniMax Media, Parent of Bethesda Softworks, for $7.5 Billion and now previous Bethesda games will be on the Pass and all new releases will be on the Pass from Day 1.

That came out of nowhere and that will drive subscriptions especially when Elder Scrolls VI comes out. I do think the pass is going to increase sooner than later. I pay £12 for the Ultimate Pass and I think it's more than worth £15 p/m especially with Bethesda coming to it.

The only thing that would make me get an XBox is if it started getting platformers and JRPGs that aren’t on PS5 or PC.

I’ll get a PS5 eventually but it will take more than Final Fantasy titles. Unless they finally figure out how to make a good one for the first time this millennium.
