That's interesting. A number of people complained that Avery was too wooden. I think he hit it just about right, calm as a captain should be when working, but also showing rage or excitment or love very well.

I’m fine with Brooks my self. I admit that we have a few laughs whenever Gawron is present, though I do like the character.

    I can't believe how good DS9 is

Maybe the subject matter resonates more in these challenging times, but it's blowing me away at the moment. It's not the light entertainment of Voyager or Enterprise that's for sure

Ben Sisko keeps his balls on his desk for all to see.

I was definitely too immature to appreciate DS9 when it was new and I was a teenager. I couldn't get past how ugly and off-putting the cast was. Cardassians and Ferengi looked so gross. The captain making speeches with a voice like he was some sort of melodramatic community theatre stage actor. The Bajorans and their stupid religion. I barely watched it at all during its original run.

Years later after college I came back to it and binged the whole thing once filesharing became a thing, and appreciated it so much more. It really was ahead of its time with the season-long story arcs and character development. I really enjoyed anything with Jadzia, Worf, or Gul Dukat.

Fast forward to today and the series has only gotten better. I've even softened on the Ferengi and come to like their episodes more than anything else in the series. I guess I'm getting more capitalist in my old age. It's hilarious how greedy they are but there's something to be said for how honestly they portray their own philosophy.

Anyway, the series keeps improving with age and I agree that this was probably the pinnacle of Star Trek storytelling.

    Computer, open my station log
It’s time to rhyme about Jake, Morn, Yates and Nog
And a fortress of fate called Deep Space Nine
A piece of real estate that has to hold the line
When the clones attack, and the quadrant’s on the brink
Peace treaties ain’t nothing but paper and ink
Dominion’s on the rise, Federation’s gonna sink
Alphas gots to pull together to break the Great Link!
    There’s a hole in space that’s a holy place
To the holy rollin’ wrinkle-nosed Bajoran race
Who just kicked the Cardassians off their planet
Was it destiny, or did the Prophets plan it?
Cuz here comes the One Who Was Foretold
The Emissary spoken of from days of old
A human heart and an alien soul
He ain’t called Hawk, he’s called “the Sisko”
Now he’s come to Bajor with his kid in tow
And he’s gonna butt heads with Ensign Ro
No take that back, she’s Major Kira
Fuck with her and she will disappear ya
With a little bit of help from a shifty fellow
A cop named Odo who’s made of Jell-O
He’s got eyes on Quark, a tavern keeper
Who’s a minor crook and a major creeper
Then Julian Bashir is a doc who macks
On a sexy old man named Jadzia Dax
Who’s gonna lose her life when Dukat attacks
And gonna call herself Ezri when she come backs
O’Brien and Worf are here from Next Gen
And the Defiant will be everybody’s new best friend
So that nobody will ever be left behind
And all come home safe to Deep Space Nine.

    Hello.

It's a tragi-comedy for me. I hated and loved the fact that EWR would not allow interpersonal conflict in ST.

DS9, although it was mostly scripted after EWR's death, was such a brilliantly written show just proves that ST wasn't dead, nor is it ever going to be.

Hey all. New poster here, looking forward to getting into discussions! Watched DS9 more times than I can count at this stage and in the midst of another run.

Have also just started a blog where I'll be going through the series and looking at it from a Marxist perspective. (I know I know another tiresome leftist)

I absolutely adore DS9, which is easily my favourite of the Trek franchises. I don't think it gets overlooked, as Commander Disillusioned suggests, so much as I think those of us who fell in love with this show don't understand why everybody didn't fall in love with this show!
But I know many people for whom this is their favourite... the mystery for me is just why so many people are turned off by DS9. Was it just the first season? Just the pilot? I'm not sure...

Hi all. Recently joined newbie here. I think DS9 is just about the best Trek there has ever been. The first couple of seasons may have been a bit slow but were great at introducing characters we'd see grow and evolve over the years. Even my wife who isn't a Trek fan has commented about how timeless some of the undertones of the stories are and when I told her the show is over 20 years old she couldn't believe it. Just fantastic story telling and character development. The show had the benefit of having talent like Ronald Moore, Robert Hewett Wolfe, and of course Pillar and Behr. I don't know that the magic could ever be recreated but it might be nice to try sometime.

Welcome Sloan. I certainly would like to find out what, exactly, happened at DS9 in the years that followed the finally. Perhaps will get something from the Picard show. There were some references for sure.

I suppose I’ve spent more time binging deep space nine than Voyager or Next GEN… I’ve always loved the show from when it first started, watched it from start to finish as it was broadcast. The only episode I don’t remember seeing first run was “hard time”, and during the time deep space nine was being syndicated, they didn’t really do “summer reruns”, so if you missed an episode, that was it, you never got to see it. I had to wait until I was able to get the DVD set… and in my opinion, between next generation and deep space nine, DS9 deserved a high definition release more than next generation. It was such an effects heavy show, most of it practical, and they had so many more shots than next generation.

Next generation never showed us what happened at ”Worf” 359- but in the DS9 pilot, we got to see exactly what happened to Admiral Hanson‘s Excalibur type ship, the saucer section got waporized into tiny chunks, there was absolutely nothing left of it. And then we got to see a beetle shaped Jem-Hadar ship take out a galaxy class ship. And then… the attack of the Klingons in season four. “And Then…”

One of the best effects shots in the whole show was when Kira and Jadzia Fly that pre-impulse ship to Bajor, there is a short shot where Kira gets the target ship lined up visually for Jadzia to take pot shots at. When I Watch that scene I’m usually sitting in my La-Z-Boy and it actually feels like the room spins around during that shot. I have to check for whiplash injuries after that! And that was just a short little clip, after season two they had longer and longer effects shots, more elaborate.

There’s so much in deep space nine… even now, when I binge the show, I am always noticing some thing that I’ve never seen before.

    Just use your ‘magination…

I know this post is years later but in many ways DS9 was the pinnacle of Trek
