Let's face it. The generation that grew up on TNG also grew up on bizarre cartoons like Ren & Stimpy and all the similar shows that followed. It's high time that these disparate legacies were finally mashed together.

I remember many complaints about 24th-Century Star Trek characters being too perfect and too high & mighty.

Well, we now know that total screwups will be always and forever.

    Bring it on!

I got a real kick out of the starbase shots —and the music! I’m still not sold on the style of humour. Hyperactive girl needs to be ejected into space immediately. But I’m not going to prejudge the entire series on the basis of 90 seconds or so.

I know the showrunner has a hard-on for TNG, but this is animation. They could have at least come up with a new design for the starbase instead of using the STIII Spacedock like TNG was so fond of using.

Leave my ST III spacedock alone! My head canon states that after the events in the film Starfleet designated it as a historical landmark to be perpetually used well beyond its days!

I’m okay with Spacedock. Definitely lends a TNG feel.

I just watched it. It's not the type of thing I normally go for, but I liked it.

I’m looking forward to Lower Decks taking some of the starch out of Star Trek’s collective shorts.

I'll give the series a shot but I can't believe how annoying that character is. Terrible first impression. The voice really doesn't seem to fit either.

Indeed. But never let the truth get in the way of mock outrage. ;)

I'm a functional alcoholic. Which is good and bad at the same time.

I watched this on Trekmovie, and even before I had finished it, I already knew what the comments will be about. Did some people seriously expect an animated show geared towards a younger demographic to be an exact match for TNG in tone, themes and characters? Come on. I'm getting quite tired of the ubiquitous "this doesn't feel like Star Trek" phrase being used as a shorthand for "this doesn't remind me of my nostalgia towards TNG." That being said, I never planned on watching this, but based on the first scene, I think I'm giving it a try. Not exactly my style, but I got a few laughs from it.

Also, why is it a problem that Mariner is annoying? Based on Boimler's reaction to her antics, she's supposed to be annoying. Not to mention, she's drunk on duty, of course she won't behave like she's just giving a daily report to her superiors. Of course this wouldn't happen on TNG, but luckily for the show, it isn't TNG, nor does it want to be. Not to mention, like I said, animated and geared towards a younger demographic.

And just a side thought... has anybody noticed that it's almost always women in TV having their behavior policed this way? Bashir was frequently called out for being annoying and "too much", Paris frequently had to be disciplined by his superiors for his antics, the EMH constantly annoyed everyone around him, Barclay was a neurotic mess who has occasionally been a legitimate creep towards women along with Geordi... no one ever said about them that they had no place in their shows or that they were too unprofessional for Starfleet. One almost gets the feeling that some Star Trek fans just have a general problem with women being loud, energetic and emotional instead of demure, prim-and-proper damsels and the occasional slowly-defrosting-ice-queen type who gets a pass for being statuesque and wearing a tight catsuit with four-inch heels.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why would being "geared towards 13 year olds" be "baaaaaad?"

If the stock footage exists...IT WILL BE USED (and traced for the animated series)!

I remember reading the comments from the owner of a well known Trek fan site, where he seem to demonstrate a belief that Lower Decks was somehow going to be a serious show while simultaneously being a comedy, and he was just so taken back when he saw the trailer and...gasp!...there was absurdist and juvenile humor in a Star Trek themed comedy. Its like I can't even with some parts of the fandom.

For my part, while it is definitely a different beast from other Trek shows, I think it's good that it opens the way it does. Its sets the tone of the show immediately, so you are told right away this won't be your typical TNG show. It allowed me to quickly re-adjust my expectations and go with the flow, and I actually started to enjoy it a bit.

If they used a new Starbase:

Nothing in this show looks like TNG it's a visual reboot:mad:

I think grounding their new ship and characters in a familiar surrounding was smart.
