Spoilers Lower Decks General Discussion Thread

I guess all animated elements always have lower detail than real or CGI models for live-action shows

 

Maybe the series is deemed to be "too niche" by Amazon/Netflix and neither are willing to pay up what CBS wants. Considering the fate of S2 of Short Treks (which had a couple of animated episodes) we had to wait for the DVD/Blu-ray release to see those (officially) in the UK at least.

Being animated and a comedy is going to work against this internationally. In the UK we may be lucky since someone will probably pick up the rights and a DVD/Blu-ray is a sure bet.

Outside of a few places like the UK, Germany, Australia plus related countries I could see much of the world giving this one a miss.

 

This ship looks awkward and lumpy, which as others have pointed out is exactly the point. This is the second-tier loser crew.

Just need to know which 3rd streaming service I need to subscribe to in the UK in order to see it

 

It's just a shame that 'my' state's name is used for such an odd ship design

 

Why not just use a Steamrunner-Class?

 

The most likely reason this hasn't been given an international release date yet is that they're planning to place it on All Access once it's available outside of North America later this year. As soon as you sell it to Netflix or Amazon, they probably get some sort of exclusivity deal for a few years. At that point, what would be the point of signing up to All Access in the UK for example if Disco's on Netflix, Picard's on Amazon, and Lower Decks is somewhere else? Much better for CBS to wait and consolidate it all on one service, much like Disney made the rest of the world wait to watch The Mandalorian.

 

Yeah, but you had to read the article right down to the end find that part about international distribution (people don't read articles anymore these days, frustrating, but a sad fact, and if they do, they stop reading somewhere in the middle if it's too long). They even bothered to make a reply to their tweet that went into details about US/Canada distribution, I think the least they could have done would have been a tweet that said "international distribution tba". It's no wonder the replies to their tweet are filled with angry Europeans, Australians, etc. It's part of an ongoing thing, only the latest "icing on the cake" (not in a good way). The newest Short Treks that never arrived on Netflix or anywhere else, the fact that a lot of their merch isn't available outside the US, them constantly geoblocking their Twitter videos, etc etc. People are getting really, really frustrated with CBS and their international marketing strategy, and I honestly can't blame them. I don't really care myself, I have zero interest in this show, but a lot of my European friends want to watch it, and they're frustrated by this complete silence on behalf of CBS (again), to say the least. And I just don't like it when my friends are frustrated.

 

Because they wanted to have a brand new ship?
Why do so many want them to reuse designs? let the Star Trek universe expand. Get your head out of the past.

It reminds me of the obeth class.
I just hope it a bit harder to blow up than a Obeth.

 

So why use a design that is so similar that it immediately strikes a chord with an established class? Why not go for something more unique?

 

It’s not my favourite but well done to the First Contact team for doing something really different and unique, it helped expand the universe in some new and interesting ways.

 

Perhaps because it’s just a cartoon. It’s not like they went out of their way to totally redesign the uniforms from what we saw in TNG.

 

And this ship doesn't feel like it expanded the universe in a different way? O_o

 

It seems pretty unique to me.

 

Because it's an FC Era design. They want to evoke TNG the TV Series. And, if it's 2380, and they're on an older/used ship, i.e. "10 years old" (just as an example), it would be TNG Era.

The Steamrunner Class would still be new-ish in 2380. It's one of the ships that fought the Borg in FC. I'm imagining that in this series, they wanted to have a ship that wouldn't be sent anywhere near the Borg. This is the USS Milk Run.

 

A thought just occurred to me: I wonder if the California class was trying to invoke/update the Zimmermans that were used in “Children of Mars”:

The design came from DSC season 2, they were only just clearly seen in COM, and was inspired by the tugs in TOS Tech Manual.

 

Then perhaps the California class is meant to be a Galaxy-style version of the Ptolemy class.
