Most people actually had individual tv's in the 90's. I think it really comes down to the HBO and rise of cable tv. Not having to follow the strict rules of the FCC allowed artist to do more edgy stuff and push the envelope. Which in turn had family friendly stuff also go a little more edgy though they were never going to go to places like say The Sopranos would. Still won't today. The real change in escapism has been that the political messaging which has always been their because exploring politics and human nature is always the subtext of all art has simply become less subtle much of the time because the one drawback for allowing artist with more freedom is they can go overboard at times and loose the nuance. So in essence in the end it still come down to talent. The good writers create good shows and the bad ones create bad ones. With a flop here and their or a writer who gets lucky once or twice.

Beltran even looks wooden there, so it wasn't all due to the writing for chakotay

Here's the photo from the DS9 casts "hanging out on a couch" interview. The 1995 TV Guide set dresser sure did love their beige backdrop.

Nothing says '90s like hanging out on a couch together?

Indeed. TV is highly specialized and niche, so that broad based appeal doesn't quite work in the same way. Though, Accendotally, I never watched science fiction with my family too often, so the niche appeal was always my experience.

Well, truth be told I wasn't conscious enough yet for most of the 90s to notice whether people had individual TVs or not.

But that sutff about the raise of cable with its looser restrictions there is a very good point.

I'm actually not quite sure what is better for escapism. If I look at a lot of the scifi/fantasy shows from he 90s many have this sorta "kitschy" quality to them and seem like they kinda try hard to be something, but utterly fail at it?
You know I'm talking about stuff like Hercules, Xena, Charmed, She Wolf of London, Beast Master, even Andromeda (after a strong start) and the worse episodes of the 90s trek shows.
With a lot of that stuff you really wonder how it ever got an audience, it just all has this "plastic" quality about it, and I'm not even talking about the special effects, but about the characterization and storylines.

Sure there was good stuff as well, like Buffy or DS9. But there's some good stuff today as well.

A couple of weeks late, for which I apologize, but back in regards to Ms. Lien, yes, the judge continued the case once more, until June 11. Maybe, next week will find a resolution to this pretty minor infraction. But, if a disposition is being held up by continued psychiatric evaluations or treatments of Ms. Lien, who knows? Hell, it's only been since last September. Not much has changed around our blue pool ball since then.:rolleyes:

Update that contains no real surprise, though, I must say that given that this county is a bit more out in the sticks, with fewer resources than her home one, where all the previous cases were determined, Smith County's court system seems to be commensurately compassionate in their handling of Ms. Lien's scenario.

Some may think such manifest forbearance has gone past its due application. While this infraction is minor, there are times that I question how many charges can occur, before it might be reasonable to expect her to serve some time. On the other hand, unlike someone I knew very closely for 35 years, I can't claim cognizance of Ms. Lien's exact diagnosis (es), or their severity, though there's
little reason to believe it isn't extremely acute.

At any rate, as this instance gets ever closer to running out to a year, since the infraction took place, the next session is scheduled for August 20, just 4 days before Ms. Lien's birthday.

I've been incommunicado, basically, for some months now, hence the very long delay in posting this info, FWIW. Ms. Lien didn't show up for her last rescheduled court date, on August 20th. However, because of the nature of the charge, I was informed by the Smith County Clerk's office, that no bench warrant would be issued. So essentially, Ms. Lien was only obligated, from that point forward, to paying whatever the fine was, for the no tags violation.

It's been a little while since I've looked online, to checkout any stories about new misadventures having emerged about her, and found none. One other tidbit of information I did secure, is that via the private attorney representing her in this last case, Ms. Lien has indeed maintained residency at the address that's been in play, for at least, several years now, which is a positive signal, if only affirming that she's not living out on the road. I haven't seen anything over the last 6 months, that would refute that claim, though given her history since moving to Tennessee, about 10 years ago, the possibility of another departure is always in the hopper.

A felicitous New Year's wish to all!!!

What, exactly, is your interest in the legal issues surrounding someone you don't know and who maintains no profile as a public figure at this point in her life?

The fact that records may be public doesn't mean that she might not prefer privacy, and no reason she's not entitled to it.
