This'll be fun. Hoping for Kirk and Uhura added in as per some online rumours for some Star Trek '09-style stuff.
I hope it has the feel of The Cage and not Discovery. I've always been a big Pike fan. The only parts of Discovery I've ever re-watched were If Memory Serves and the scene where Pike sees his future. Please Cage technology not Discovery. Hoping for the best.
If the show-runners want to they could have the Discoprise encounter the USS Farragut at some point with Kirk on board. Its not really necessary though as that is the sort of thing they could add at the end of the series when Kirk takes command of the Enterprise.
Excellent, they caved to the obvious demand and went for it! Hoping that this series gets a chance to do less serialized and more episodic storytelling. Every other recent series has been heavily seralized, with a single story driving the season. Would be nice to use this one to get old-school episodes, or maybe 2-3 episode arcs at most. Don't need another galactic ending catastrophe that also has several layers of conspiracy behind it, we've got a few of those running already...
That's not the slightest chance that they're going to replicate The Cage for this, so we might as well put that to bed now.
I wish I could be more excited about this than I am, especially considering how thrilled I was about the prospect six months ago. But Picard has left such a sour taste in my mouth that I find myself tentative at best. Add to that my daily existential ennui, I just can't exhibit anything more than a resounding "Whatever." Yes. The chemistry between the Mount, Peck, and Romijn is nothing short of magical. But the casts were both strengths for the other two shows. It's the writing that's always been the problem. And I feel like that magical chemistry is going to be completely squandered. I think I might be a bit more excited had they brought in some outside help. But spreading a writing staff across spin-offs almost never works out well. And there's nothing about this current crop of misfits that instills any amount of confidence - given their most recent product of taking the offerings of a Pulitzer-winning writer and turned it into uninspired, ordinary dressing. Kurtzman was never really a writer. He's a producer who has the means to dip his toe into the creative pool every now and then. He was the lesser half of a highly uneven writing team who really only got his solo chance after the other guy went bought an entire tinfoil wardrobe. And it was a disaster. Kurtzman is a slightly more talented Rick Berman. (Albeit with a substantially more-likable personality.) Goldsman's career as a writer has been a middling disappointment to be sure. He showed glimpses of greatness early on, but it's never really amounted to much. I think the problem is, he got too distracted with other career paths. I suppose this could be a chance for him, provided he dedicates everything to running the writers' room - no directing, producing, or anything of that sort. There really isn't much of the others to go on, but from what little there is, I don't see much to be excited about. There's also the way this whole thing has come about. It seems like it's come about more as a reactionary attempt to placate the core fanbase than an actual genuine desire to create art. This always runs the risk of the end result feeling haphazardly slapped together - which in turn inevitably leads to more hackneyedness. But the fact they're tossing out the platitudes like peanuts has me worried. It's doubling-down on the same smoke-blowing that's been going on since Fuller left. It's time to stop telling and show us something. Because here's the thing: I never really bought into the whole "Star Trek is this, not that." thing. It can be anything. That's not to say I don't still yearn for some good old TOS/TNG style stories and will be more than happy to have some. The problem is, they've been staying these same tired things for so long now that it's starting to feel a bit boy/wolfy. Had the mission statement always been "Disco is Disco and Picard is Picard. Now let's Star Trek." I might be more inclined to believe them.
I've said elsewhere that I'm not wild about the idea of more prequel series, and while that's still true, a Pike show holds more appeal for me than some of the other stuff on the upcoming production slate. "New Eden" was a high point of DIS S2 so I'm interested to see where this goes.
Picard was awesome, although I'm hoping for a different angle for SNW, more toward the exploration and... well, discovery. We've got two long form storytelling vehicles about Big Stakes, this is an opportunity to do something different.
Honestly, I'd be hoping for something a bit more inspired than planet of the week, but I could get over that as a premise - it's been a while.
This is the first show that I think has promise. Discovery was only good when Pike was on it for me. Picard looked tired and while not terrible, didn't really do much for me. But if they treat Pike right, it could be awesome. Might be fun to see maybe Scotty as a younger engineer.
Three amazing actors, one hell a beautiful Enterprise and a f*** ton of angry Star Trek fans who will scream this isn't Star Trek. It's going to be a great few years on the forum allright!! I'm game though. Looking forward to this show.
I loved all of the stuff with Pike and the Enterprise crew on Discovery, so I'm really happy to hear about this. I can almost guarantee you that is not going to happen. This is from the same people who made Discovery, with the same cast that was in Discovery, so I can't see them not sticking to that style.
And they shouldn't be expected to. People need to get over themselves and all this whinging, whining, and gatekeeping regarding the current state of Star Trek. If you don't like Star Trek as it is now, stop paying attention to it.
