Spoilers Star Trek: Picard 1x10 - "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2"

I see no reason they would have old ships, when they can use giant replicators to create huge pieces of structure, like 3D printing on a larger scale. And they would likely reclaim/recycle the matter from old ships to build the new ones, so the old ones wouldn't be around anymore.

Is the new Picard still Picard? That's a question without an answer. It's purely philosophical. It's a difference that makes no difference.

Actually, ToyBoxComix, there is a difference. If the ban was in place, then PIcard, as a synthetic, would be limited in his freedom. With the ban lifted, Picard can go anywhere. This was mentioned in the episode.

I, too, long for the Golden Age of starship design where we got some very beautiful ships. Sadly, those days are long past, and we are in a declining period of starship design.

The annoying thing is the designers are still around and they would gladly come back to design ships but they refuse to hire them. The only guy around still is John Eaves and his work barely makes it to the show. I think the last time we saw one of his ships was in episode 1 with that Romulan scout ship.

EDIT: Actually the 2385 shuttles were his as well.

 

It's also the intention behind most of humanity's most remarkable accomplishments, including such notable things as flight and space exploration, which fittingly served as the very basis for Star Trek.

 

The Akira class has always struck me as a floaty, light and unreliable piece of metal that you lose control of when faced with tough space conditions.
