As great as the scene is*, I'd also be perfectly fine with them overwriting it with their own take. I know all the Disney stuff is considered equal "canon", but live action should trump animation. Surely no one predicted they'd actually do a legit live-action Obi Wan series when Rebels was being written. *Heck, part of me still slightly prefers the non-canonical comic where Maul is blasted by Owen while he and Obi Wan are dueling.
The only prequel characters/actors that should appear are Joel Edgerton as Owen (and the gal who played Beru) and maaaaaaaybe Jimmy Smits/Bail Organa. I really, truly hope we don't get Lil' Luke.
McGregor and Lucasfilm were reportedly in talks over this project for years. After the show was officially announced, I recall McGregor saying something about having to keep it a secret for four years. That would put the origins of this project all the way back in 2015. "Twin Suns," the Rebels episode in question, didn't air until 2017 and was probably produced some time in 2016. So even back then they knew that the possibility of a live action Kenobi movie or TV show was there. I don't think what happened in Rebels should be discounted just because it's animation. It's one of the greatest scenes in the entire franchise. The only thing I'd be happy seeing in live action is the exact same scene, except from Obi-Wan's perspective rather than Ezra and Maul's. And, frankly, I seriously doubt that anyone could come up with another take on Obi-Wan and Maul's final encounter that could top what they came up with in Rebels.
For my money, no. And I say that as someone who has read a variety of fan fiction, including one where Maul can summoning against his enemies and leading a new clone army of Quinlan Vos clones against the Jedi. I have watched plenty of fan films where Maul is demonstrated to be a badass character. Thus far, all fan suggestions for a final duel go for "rule of cool" rather than fitting with the characters. The Rebels duel is a solid character piece, a nod to the inspiration for Star Wars, while building off of huge themes.
I think I actually screamed " OH SHIT!!!!!!" at my TV when OBW very cooly dispatched Maul..........#likeaboss
Won't happen for a variety of reasons. Most notably, the animated stuff is already influencing the live action stuff, like Maul's cameo in Solo, the various Rebels easter eggs and cameos in Rogue One (not to mention Saw Gerrera) and even Rise of Skywalker has some notable stuff from the animated shows. Plus, if Filoni is involved with the Obi-Wan show like he is with The Mandalorian, he'll make sure they stay consistent with his animated shows.
Yeah, Rebels didn't "ruin" anything. They ended Maul's story the only way it could end. Maul isn't really needed for this part of Kenobi's story. The spectre of Vader, and Obi's guilt will be antagonists enough I suspect. Of course if they *really* wanted to use Maul in the show without contradicting Rebels then there's always the force vision route.
This is really the key reason. Filoni is going to be an integral part of the SW creative team going forward. They're not going to say "Oh, those shows you devoted a decade of your life to making for us don't count". And if any company is going to respect animation as an art form, it's Disney.
I finally saw the Obi-Wan/Maul duel in Rebels while watching it on Disney+, and I loved it. It's one of the best scenes in the entire series. As for the Obi-Wan show, it looks like the problem is that the show was supposed to be focused on Obi-Wan protecting Luke, and some of the people involved thought what they were turning out was ending up to close to The Mandalorian, so they're now starting over with new writers. As annoying as this is, I can see not wanting to have their first two series end up to similar.
I'm disappointed, but it's understandable. I hope they're able to come up with another story that will be satisfying, and I hope they keep Deborah Chow involved.
Gods ******* damn it. And now they report that they are cutting it from 6 episodes to 4. Could they not have checked the scripts a bit sooner? Disney really make themselves look like amateurs in regards to Star Wars.
I really wish people would stop using "Disney" as a synonym/euphemism for Lucasfilm. Also, the cut from 6 episodesto 4 is due to completely discarding the 2 scripts that were already completed.
Kathleen Kennedy: (back at D23): "we are really close, we have all the scripts written." Ewan McGregor (since the news): It just gives them more time to write, to make the scripts even better) Notices news of two scripts being lost. See, What I am saying is NOT an opinion!
Well that is a dumb, deflective question. As the head of Lucasfilm, the buck stops with her. Live in whatever fantasy land you want, though. I won't stop you. I'm sure we both love star wars and can talk about the geeky aspects of it and get along great. We can also talk about the great mythology behind it. But that question is asinine. KK is the head honcho in charge of Lucasfilm production.. everything runs through her.. so who else can you blame..? So far she has had at least four director problems in her tenure, and now this. If you don't see a pattern, then you refuse to see it.
When is Iger going to make a change? This stuff keeps happening...It's been happening since the the start of Disney taking SW over.
