The Romulans occupying a Borg Cube in Picard might be an example of payback. If the Borg attacked System J-25 before "The Neutral Zone", then why of the four major Alpha Quadrant powers of the time, did the Borg attack the Romulans first?

What prompted them to choose the Romulans instead of the Federation or the Klingons or the Cardassians?

If they did, it might have been nothing more complicated than Romulan space being closer to Borg space than Federation space or anybody else's.

In the VOY episode "Message in a Bottle," the ship that was traveling along the edge of the Delta Quadrant (home of the Borg) didn't seem to take very long to reach Romulan space.

The Borg attack. The Borg assimilate.

That's what they do. They don't need any more reason than that.

It could just be Romulan agents are occupying a Borg Cube to mine it for the technology they want to rebuild their Empire, that they nothing personal against the Borg, they just this tech to help achieve their aims.

Exactly, I think the Borg just found the Romulans first and were engaging in targets of opportunity, I do not think they have grudge against the Romulans.

If this is asking about why the Borg did what they did in "The Neutral Zone," it might belong in the TNG forum...or arguably GTD with the barely there Picard angle.

If I recall correctly, the countdown comic for star trek '09 said the romulans had borg tech prior to the destruction of romulans. Nero stole some to modify his mining ship to confront spock.

Romulan space is "north-east" of the Federation, "north" of the Klingon Empire, and the closest to the delta quadrant. When you go from Borg space to the Federation, Romulan space is the first of known territories.

Well, I wouldn't be interested in this topic if not for Picard*, that's the audience I'm going for, and I think it will become relevant to the series if they want to establish the history between the Borg and the Romulans since that was never truly done on TNG or VOY... but I see your point and I'm only anticipating what I think a connection will be that might turn out to be nothing at all.

    * This is the point where someone can hit me back with the rim-shot of "You wouldn't have been interested in TNG at all if not for Picard!" The irony's not lost on me... :p

In 'Q Who', didn't Data say something like the planet surfaces the Enterprise was investigating in the delta quadrant were similiar to the planets in the neutral zone earlier in season 1?

Might it be interesting if Picard series gave us somekind on explanation what the Borg was doing in the neutral zone in season 1 of TNG? There was a cube in a trailer, perhaps it has something to do with it?

Alright, I've added spoiler warnings to the title and moved to GTD, since this is TNG/Picard cross-discussion.

Going all the way back to "The Neutral Zone" the Romulans were hit as well as the Federation. The Borg seemed to have interest in both.

You mean the ‘09 Countdown comic that has been completely contradicted by the new Picard Countdown comic? ;)

How has it been "completely contradicted", please.

Uh, there's an absurdly simple answer to the question posed in the thread title. It's the same as the answer to why mountain climbers climb mountains, and the answer to why sensible people go around mountains.

    "Because they're there."

    Go grab a Rom.

Borgie drones are grabbing the Rommies, why are they grabbing the Rommies? To hug the Rommies, to evelop... the Rommies hug the Rommies. Why do the Borg grab the Rommies? Because they're in love.

    Works for me.

I don't climb mountains but I do hike them. Why? Exactly that. Because it's there.

We’ll have an idea at least a few months from now, or we’ll know for certain in two weeks or earlier, depending on whether or not someone posts spoilers from an early-release event.

Do the Romulans really stand out from the crowd? Earth has its share of neat round craters, too: the Borg may have come scooping for cities of interest often enough. Ditto for every Trek player at just about any juncture of their history; who would even notice if an entire culture on Earth went missing in, say, the 1600s?

OTOH, if the Borg value their privacy, then a quick look at the neighborhood would tell them that at this point of history, stealing Romulan cities is preferable to stealing Fed or Klingon ones: the word would be less likely to spread from that tightly controlled and cordoned-off realm.

As for when exactly the Borg hit the Romulans, we can't tell yet. In TNG "The Neutral Zone", they admit to only losing their outposts on the UFP border, not to having zombie cyborgs swarming over major colonies or scooping up cities of the homeworld, but that only tells us the Romulans are not the admitting type. Would be fun to learn that their isolation since the 2310s was due to the Borg. Would be fun to learn something almost but not quite entirely unlike that. Might be we learn nothing about that little detail in PIC, too.

They did say they were occupied with other matters in The Neutral Zone, IIRC

...But it might be more interesting to learn that those did not involve the Borg than that they did.

In any case, Picard+Borg+Romulans(+androids) = potential for interesting stuff. And we're clearly about to get more on each of those now. Without the Picard vehicle, we probably wouldn't; Trek is full of potential for spinoffs of spinoffs, but the Borg or the Romulans as such aren't key candidates.
