I thought the costumes were the weakest part of Prelude. I was not a fan of those jackets.

And they were miles better than what they're wearing in the new Axanar shorts (made by 90% different people to Prelude). Is that yellow spandex? And then they don't even have the patches they sold as Axanar merch for so long on them:lol::yikes:

Really? I can't see a fault in the costumes. At least not in Prelude. What's happened since then is a different story.

Yeah, the dress uniforms were awful. Garth's and the female uniform were OK, but not spectacular. Hertzler's uniform bugged me to no end.

Was the Klingon uniform Chang's original one, or a replica?

I've hated turtleneck sweaters since I was a little kid and my mom kept putting them on me.

I think I read it was the one that Chang's body double wore. So it was from ST6, just not Chang's hero version

My headcanon is that the Disco colored uniforms, now confirmed in use since 2254, were the Constitution class only uniforms given to the rest of the fleet 2257 (thus Pike declaring them as new to Saru), and the turtleneck sweaters are some bizarre dress uniform for special occasions. The incident on Rigel VII in the Cage (it was Rigel's entry to the Federation in the Early Voyages comic) and going past the Galactic Barrier for the first time in WNMHGB. Come the 2260s, the normal uniform switched from Disco colored uniforms to TOS uniforms.

Perhaps the old turtlenecks are a version of a Winter Wear Uniform that was discontinued shortly after that particular episode?

These would've been a good compromise. The Discovery uniforms never felt right for the time period.

But they would have been great for a show taking place post-TUC but pre-TNG.

I think the entire show would've worked better in the 2310's or 2320's.

Agreed. Just change Sarek to Spock (with his penchant for mentoring younger people such as Saavik and Valeris, a trait Sarek never seemed to have), change Spock to Spock's son Xon, have T’Kuvma and his ilk be renegades who oppose Azetbur’s aid deal with the Federation, and remove the already-afterthought-like deflector dishes on the Starfleet ships, and the show would fit in nicely post-TUC. Plus, the Mirror Universe would already have been a known quantity instead of them needing to ‘classify’ it in a half-hearted attempt at remaining true to TOS canon. And to top it off, at the end of season 1 we could have seen the Enterprise-B or C instead of a completely different looking NCC-1701.

I’d be curious to see what a Cage style Discoverse would have looked like.

From ships, to uniforms, equipment, etc...

As much as a TOS purist as I am, I don't find myself too interested in a Cage style Discoverse. If you really want that, you can read the Star Trek Early Voyages comic book, which is still sold in omnibus form.

I'm perfectly fine with my headcanon that the Cage bridge (also seen in Where No Man Has Gone Before) was a temporary bridge module while Pike's real bridge was being upgraded during the Rigel mission, and this temp module was again used in WNMHGB during the upgrade from Pike's Disco bridge to the TOS bridge (and also to prevent Pike's glitchy bridge that already had hologram problems from interfering with the already dangerous Galactic Barrier mission).

The turtleneck sweaters were dress uniforms for both momentous occasions, as I explained in my post above.

Interesting headcanon idea (I especially like the concept of the turtlenecks being a formal uniform variant) but once you've started to make excuses for some of the visual discrepancies, where do you stop? What about the transporter room? What about the corridors? Sickbay medical instruments? The drastically different shape (and maybe size) of the Enterprise herself?!

DSC shows the events of TOS through a very different visual lens, and it seems that the intention was never to neatly line up with the visuals of the 1960s (made explicitly clear when the Enterprise sailed onto screen at the end of season one). IMO, trying to do so requires opening up way too many cans of worms!

What might be more interesting to ponder is; what would DSC look like through a TOS lens?

The Enterprise is a big ship. Different corridors, different transporter rooms, and did we see Enterprise's sickbay in Disco?

Right now everything can be explained. It might not be so easy if we get a full Pike show, but maybe we should wait and see what happens.

And you stop making excuses when you want to. Simple as that. They decided to make excuses for Klingon ridges but not for Romulan ones.

Two mission-specific hulls, two sets of uniforms, one command designated NCC-1701.

Really? There's an explanation for a completely different looking ship?

    I stand corrected :guffaw:

The problem here is that people are still under the delusion that the ship actually looked like it did in "The Cage," then got refitted to look like it does in DSC, then got refitted again to look like it did in TOS. That's a load of crap. CBS's intention is that this is how the ship always looked, TOS be damned. The only 'explanation' needed is that CBS has no interest whatsoever in 'linking' DSC to TOS. Literally everything about DSC (Short Treks included) contradicts TOS in some way. So it's pointless to speculate how it all fits together when even the people in charge of it do not care about it fitting together.

Which is why (getting back on topic) we will never see anyone in DSC wearing a turtleneck sweater uniform. And don't think for one second that in Star Trek Picard you're going to see a diagram or desktop model of the NCC-1701 like how it looked in TOS, because the same people are in charge of that show too.

The Enterprise has always been modular. So, yes.

Mileage will vary as to how the explanation works for each individual. Personally, I see it as a nonissue. The stories and the characters are more important to me, as well as an optimistic future of working together despite challenges and struggles and darkness.

Sorry, Star Trek is more to me than the props that could be imagined with 60s era tech. Star Trek is a show about the future. It saddens me that rather than focus on the future there is a need to get hung up in the past, both on the part of productions and fans.
