Although I'm not typically keen on these let's ignore the rest of the cast and focus on two characters this weeks type affairs that both Walking Dead shows get in on (particularly not this early in the season) this was an interesting episodes all the same. Seeing some insight into Beta's pre-Whisperer life and how he and Alpha met was intriguing. I notice they avoid showing us his face, being that in the flashbacks he's wearing a ski mask all the time, and the pictures we see of him and his friend have their faces blanked out. Though when Alpha did get a glimpse of his face at the end, she did seem to recognize him, suggesting they could be going for a similar pre-apocalyptic origin for Beta to what he had in the comics. The present day storyline shows us Alpha is a bit more sentimental towards Lydia than she's let on, even to the extent of keeping Lydia's toy bunny from when she was young. Beta appears to be growing concerned that Alpha is indeed getting weak and endangering the Whisperers. And we see the rise of a common Whisperer elevated to Alpha's inner circle and granted the name Gamma, who apparently Beta does not seem to think highly of. And we get some follow-up to what whisperer who had to leave her baby behind at Hilltop last season. We see what the Whisperers were doing when the satellite crashed, all culminating with the final scene from last week where Alpha and Carol spot each other. So while it is a bit unfortunate the rest of the cast are ignored in what is only the second episode of the season, we do get a lot of backstory on Alpha and Beta and groundwork is laid for the Whisperer for this season, making for a pretty satisfactory episode all the same.
In many ways, Beta is the villain that needs to meet his end, even before Alpha. As noted yesterday, he's too into being a monster, and terrorizing anyone not sharing his "dead" obsession. He needs to be severely punished and not just eliminated with a bullet. He's thoroughly disgusting.
I gather that being a Whisperer is what has given Beta a new sense of purpose after the apocalypse and has helped him deal with the losses of what he had before the apocalypse, which is why he's so fanatically devout to the idea.* While this does make him a "monster" within the context of the show, as a member of the audience I find it makes him an intriguing character to watch. *I am admittedly drawing elements from Beta's background in the comics that are not yet in evidence in the show in my assessment of him.
So anyway, this was a very special episode about The Whisperers, showing how Alpha and Beta met during the early days of the Zombie Apocalypse. He was an inmate in a rubber room and she was a sociopath long before the Zombies came. And that's about the size of it. Next week, back to our regularly scheduled show.
I didn't mind this episode, I think I would have liked some reference to the main cast while its going on. Neither Alpha or Beta are particularly empathetic, however hard Morton tries with the material. I didn't realise till after that Gamma was Thora Birch! So I believe in the comics Beta Spoiler is a celebrity is that right?
Me neither. All I actually thought is that she looked a lot like Alpha. Thora Birch and Samantha Morton really could play sisters. They have very similar features. Yes. Spoiler Ex-basketball player / actor
Was he in inmate? That wasn't really all that clear, I thought his friend was the inmate, Beta was visiting when shit went down, and stayed there afterwards because he was too attached to his friend. It's possible they might be making modifications to that on the show. Spoiler A fifth season episode of Fear the Walking Dead featured a record album with a man on the cover a lot of people think looks like Ryan Hurst (Beta's actor). Ryan Hurst was on Talking Dead this weekend, and when asked about that, although he didn't give a direct answer he did imply that was indeed him we see on that album cover. Having Beta be a singer in his former life could shed light on his fixation on humming in the flashbacks.
I think that it's better to put speculation on possible future developments and plots inside a spoiler code. Even though it is just speculation based on the comics.
That could be. In the scene where the kid asked about the "pillows on the walls," I got the impression that Alpha was referring to the guy. But I could be wrong. Anyway, how would she know?
Not entirely sure I'd I consider that "huge," but... it was a very "meh" episode. It's one I ended up sort of partly watching mostly because it was dealing with characters I don't care about and it was a little "too dark," bleak and slow-paced, which for this series is saying quite a bit.
Yeah, it was one I thought of just skipping but figured there'd be something in it that later will be referenced or called back on that'd make me lost. I do like the guy who Beta so, enjoyable enough I guess..
The Walking Dead Season 10 - Episode 3 - "Ghosts" Michonne / Judith: Love seeing Michonne cutting down the hotheaded among them with facts. Carol should have thanked her for preventing a border fight they would have easily lost. As she pointed out, they are on edge, but it was nice to see her finally rest with her kids. Lydia: Its abut time she's as a resource, but some cannot get past seeing her as a wolf among the sheep, which will become a serious issue next week. Alpha / Whisperers: Turing the screws on Carol with that line about Henry calling out her name. She has marked Carol as the "one" she wants to eliminate (ultimately), and speaking of Carol... Carol: PTSD...and popping pills, all driving her to fantasize about her "perfect" dream world, from the book cover with all of her in an idyllic setting serving her dead children (that caught me off guard) to a home with Daryl cooking, and Henry alive and well. We know the showrunners are hard-selling the idea of Carol's trauma pushing her to seek revenge against Alpha, but I do not want to see her become so reckless that she ends up getting herself (or others) killed. ...and I see that as a strong possibility. Even though she imagined Daryl told her a story about his father, she was incredibly rude in writing the man off as a "meth snorting--". Daryl has not been kind about the memory of his father, but Carol crossed the line. Rosita: Eugene...ugh. Its about time she set Eugene straight about the nature of their relationship. He's a fool for thinking that she would just see him in a romantic way and/or just step over Gabriel. I was thinking no one could be so immature, but he is. Negan / Aaron: Aaron is not seeing the bigger picture of using Negan--who can fight, and I suppose he does not give a crap about the world Carl wanted to build. Yes, Eric died during one of the firefights with the Saviors, but at the end of it all, everyone has lost someone--to walkers or the living. Holding on to his anger changes nothing--something Rick and Michonne tried to illustrate to Maggie. Now that Negan saved his life, is it freedom, or just picking tomatoes and back to jail? Siddiq: He's falling apart. Its more than fatigue from taking care of the baby, so when is he going to say...anything real about the night? NOTES: Alpha's terror strategy is working the last nerves of the survivors. Its anyone's guess who will splinter off to pull off some foolish act of revenge--with or without Carol. GRADE: A.
